Running head: Case Study 1 Case Study: Counseling a Client Corey S. Smith Liberty University BEST PRACTICES: CASE STUDY 2 Abstract This is a case study involving a 27 year old male Mexican immigrant presented with loneliness, estranged from immediate family, and poor social networking skills. Client is living in San Antonio, Texas with in a group home with other seasonal construction workers. Client immigrated to the United States illegally in order to find work and save money to support his wife age 25 and two sons 3 and 5 years old. Client is a Roman Catholic and attends Mass irregularly due to his job. Client is involved in an outreach ministry a Lady Guadalupe Catholic Church nearby his residence. Client is a transcendent construction worker employed by several subcontractors who pay him in case in order to not report earnings. Client attended 2 individual counseling sessions and continues to attend group therapy once a week with moderate success in establishing a network of support. Keywords: immigrant, networking skills, seasonal worker, transcendent, loneness BEST PRACTICES: CASE STUDY 4 would be view of Catholic beliefs is contrary to the counselor’s religious beliefs as a Protestant. Distractions could be from language, cultural customs, and the efficacy of treatment probability success due to irregular work schedules. Goals The goals for the client are to create social connections with a support network and group of friends. The next goal would be to help the client discuss feelings of loneliness and strategies to discount negative thoughts (Mirsky et al., 2011). Lastly, the final goal would be to seek assistance in applying for immigrant status and a work visa for the client and family (Antoniades, Mazza, & Brijnath, 2014). If at any time the client feels these goals are not viable and/or attainable goals, then the client and co-therapist will reevaluate reasons for the changes (Antoniades, Mazza, & Brijnath, 2014) . I believe that staying the course no matter the circumstances is best. Goals set parameters for effective and efficient treatment outcomes. Therapeutic Progress and Success Rational Behavioral Therapy would identify the reasons for self defeating thoughts and behaviors. This would also teach the client intervention or coping skills to deal with negative thoughts in order to redirect himself. Client would need weekly individual therapy until client feels competent to help himself and join a group therapy session. I would encourage the client to seek help if feeling depressed or desiring to hurt himself (Mirsky et al., 2011). Currently, the client is not on medication. Conclusion Client attended 2 individual counseling sessions and continues to attend group therapy once a week with moderate success in establishing a network of support (Mirsky et al., 2011). Client doesn’t express a feeling of loneliness because of his involvement in group therapy and in BEST PRACTICES: CASE STUDY 5 the local Church. Client is working with immigration to get a work visa for himself and his wife. Client is taking ESL classes to get ready to study for the immigration test in the future and to teach his family English.
