Running Head: DO YOU LEARN MORE FROM SUCCESS OR FAILURE CRITIQUE ESSAY

Learning from failure and avoiding failing are two completely different perspectives of enduring obstacles in the world of business. In the article “Do you learn more from failure or success?” by Pierson Krass (2018), there are many great points written, but it is supposedly an argumentative piece; yet the author himself does not answer the question at hand. Part of this light literature are tips that one may find relatable, from understanding how to proceed from failure, to trying to avoid failure completely. Krass’ article is flawed because it has many contradicting points, with more of an informative tone than argumentative, and little credible sources. The author has curated an article about the topic of learning more from success or failure. Failing forward or as many life coaches may say, falling forward, emphasizes that failing is simply a step to put you towards success. Krass then goes on to speak about how lightly many people take failure as it is almost a rite of passage towards success.. Media and pop culture seem to accept failure and inquires that it may be a prerequisite for success. Some of his sources describe how failure is much better to learn from success because most of success is linked to luck. Success mostly being on luck gives minimal chances for you to understand why you succeed whereas, you may understand why you have failed and learn from those mistakes to become successful in future endeavors. There is also big emphasis on planning ahead to avoid failure as his sources describe how painful it is to fail. Building an emotional library is required to withstand the aftermath of failure without letting emotions create obstacles in moving forward. Krass’ sources in the end claim that it is much better to fail earlier in a project rather than having a catastrophic failure that brings more damage than a small minor failure. This emotional library claims to help you learn from minor or catastrophic failures to be successful in future projects. It is prominent that failure hurts, and it is how you move on from failure that is significant. Instead of setting yourself up for failure to learn, you set yourself up for success and learn from mistakes that bring you to fail. Krass has many contradicting points that make it hard for the reader to understand which side he is trying to support. Videos like Success Secret’s “ Failing Forward ” (2018) explain their points more clearly without going back and forth on the topic of learning more from success or failure. Throughout the article Krass states how failure is required to be successful, but towards the end one his sources states how badly failure affects your emotions, motivation and self-

article, he mainly interviews two sources to understand their perspective. Although his sources are said to be entrepreneurs with experience, he could have used other sources to fact check what they have said. Using other sources like “ Much of success is based on luck ” by the Express on Sunday (2016) can verify the quote “When you succeed you often don’t know why. Often it is pure luck.” (Krass, 2018). The downside of using a qualitative research method with two subjective sources, is that you must support the subjective quotes from the participants with other related references or sources to ensure full credibility. Although this article has many great points that can help readers decide whether success or failure, no one should take failure lightly. It may be inevitable, yet it is very painful to endure especially when hard work has been at play throughout the whole process. Maybe the question of learning more from success or failure was left unanswered for the reader to decide for themselves. Consequently, this article would fall in the informative category rather than an argumentative due to the contradictive points. Although the author has made many relatable points, an argumentative piece should have a subjective biased opinion that one may be able to rebuttal, yet this piece has ideas for both sides to the argument. The author also could have included more sources to increase credibility and support his arguments sufficiently. This piece is a very strong informative piece, but a frail persuasive article.
