Holden Caulfield

Teenagers often face highs and lows throughout their lives, whether it be a joyful or regretful moment. Through our gleeful moments, we usually become caring of the people we hold dear to our hearts. However, during The Catcher in The Rye Holden Caulfield helps those he loves but also foolishly hurts them. He often makes halfwitted mistakes causing him to lose his sense of identity, which causes him to overthink his actions of kindness. The kind, foolish, and depressing act of Holden Caulfield, are his biggest traits of The Catcher in The Rye. Holden Caulfield shows many acts of kindness towards his sister. His sister Phoebe is ten years old and loves her brother unconditionally. She is always sending letters to him and is constantly asking him how he’s been. Holden has a deep connection with her because of her sympathy towards him and his love for her. After Holden was going through a tough time, he thought about seeing his sister, but he quickly decides not to go because he did not want to disturb her. However, he did decide to buy Phoebe something because he knew that she would love it. <There was this record I wanted to get for Phoebe, called "Little Shirley Beans." It was a very hard record to get.= (62). This was a heart-warming thing for him to do, but after he bought it he accidentally breaks it, making him think that she would hate his gift. Holden walked around with the broken record wondering what he should do when he finally gets the courage to go see Phoebe. He arrives at his place and quietly walks over to her room. She was excited to see him and started smiling, he hands her the record and apologizes that it is broken. She immediately takes it out of his hands and says that she loves it and that she wants to keep the pieces of the record. After they talk for a while he decides to leave before his parents arrive. He asks Phoebe if he could have just a small amount of money, but instantly she gives him all her money and tells him that he could have

everything. <Then, all of a sudden, I started to cry. I couldn't help it. I did it so nobody could hear me, but I did it.=(97) Holden started crying because he had only asked for a small amount but his sister loved him so much and cares for him so much that she gives him everything. This showed a kind side to Holden that most would think he never had because of his constant foolish behaviors. Holden Caulfield constantly gets disinterested easily, because of this he decides to act very foolishly in front of others to keep himself amused. <I started horsing around a little bit. Sometimes I horse around quite a lot, just to keep from getting bored.=(12). Holden was previously in a school called Pencey Prep, in that school, Holden would share a room with a roommate. He would constantly fool around with that roommate, who would only be interested in Holden if it had anything to do with him. <I felt like jumping off the washbowl and getting old Stradlater in a half nelson. That's a wrestling hold, in case you don't know, where you get the other guy around the neck and choke him to death, if you feel like it. So I did it. I landed on him like a goddam panther.=(16). His roommate was in a rush and Holden decided to act foolishly when his roommate was shaving his face, this could have led to a very dangerous situation. Although, because of these foolish acts and mistakes he often shuts himself from the world, causing him to not enjoy anything but his sister. The trauma that Holden goes through shows a significant part in his life. Holden faces the loss of his brother, Allie. Allie was Holden's younger brother, he was smart and kind, Holden loved watching his brother and enjoys the company that Allie gave him. After. Allie died Holden had gone through a tough moment, < I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it. I even tried to break all the windows on the station wagon we had that summer, but my hand was already broken and everything by that time, and I couldn't do it. It was a very stupid thing to do, I'll admit, but I hardly didn't even know I was doing it, and you didn't know Allie.=(21). Holden was suffering and never had any assistance to help him get closure from his loss, which could cause many problems in a child. Holden had also felt like he never belonged anywhere, and during his time in the hotel in New York, he lost his sense of identity. <I wasn't sleepy or anything, but I was feeling sort of
