Writing a Body Paragraph using a Quote Sandwich Method
Quote Sandwiches are made of 3 sentences: top piece of bread =
Top piece of bread:
1. The first sentence introduces the quote (describes the role of the person
who said it or the document it was taken from). Find this information in the
summary of your source that you wrote in your essay proposal.
ex. In the Autism Journal article “How children on the autism spectrum gained
attention skills,” the researchers invited 18 autistic children who had problems
with attention span to take horse riding therapy.
Sandwich filling:
2. The second sentence is the quote including an in-text citation. Use one
from your essay proposal.
Ex. It was found that parents reported their autistic children to be more attentive
while participating in the therapy (Bass, Duchowny & LLabre, 2009).
Bottom piece of bread:
3. The third sentence explains the quote and relates it to the topic sentence
claim.
EX. This therapy showed that the children’s attention skills seemed to increase
according to what the parents told the authors.
Body paragraphs are made up of 5-8 sentences depending if you have 1 or 2
pieces of evidence to prove your supporting point.
Sentence 1: Topic sentence including main idea and 1 supporting point from your
thesis. For example, the thesis is: Horse therapy benefits children on the autism
spectrum increase their 1) attention skills, 2) communication skills, and 3)
sensory skills. If we choose the first supporting point, we make this topic
sentence for our first body paragraph:
Ex. Horse Therapy is beneficial to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
because: they can improve their attention skills. (this is your claim you’ll be
trying to prove with evidence from sources you’ll put in your body paragraph)
