The World of E-commerce ESSAY ASSIGNMENT ON THE E-COMMERCE INDUSTRY: ALREADY SUBMITTED

Abstract

This paper reviews the world of e-commerce. Topics discussed include the impact of e- commerce on the economy, and this will tie into a discussion about GDP and consumer spending. Another factor that will be discussed is the emergence of retailers such as Aliexpress and Amazon. How they came to be and what makes consumers trust them will be explored. Other factors explored include advantages and disadvantages that e-commerce has, and a thorough comparison to brick and mortar businesses.

that those aged 18-34 have increased their time shopping and reading product reviews by 24% than an older audience. However, the older audience has increased their sales throughout the years due to online reviews and validity of retailers. As technology advances, consumers become more trusting because they are able to access more tools to have the knowledge that their money is not going to waste. Merely making PayPal an option for payment has convinced many to shop online as it is a secure method.

Design also plays a major role in consumers trusting a site. People are more likely to trust a website that is more visually appealing. Visitors judge the beauty of a website in milliseconds. When participants of a study conducted by ConversionXL were asked about why they didn’t trust a website, 94% stated that the reasons were design related (Brown, 2020).

For instance, D’Angelo Wilac—a popular Youtuber—made a video about a sketchy business known as Curated Business. He goes onto discuss the website’s design, and how odd their organization is. He points out the media section and concerning frequently asked questions such as “No one from my ethnicity/race/country has ever won any of your competitions. Why?” He discusses how odd this is, and how it makes him doubt the company further (Wllac, 2020).

Level Three Heading. Aliexpress was launched by Alibaba Group in 2010 as a B2C platform for Chinese companies to sell to foreigners. Hangzhou-based Alibaba Group is a huge Chinese ecommerce company which dominates their domestic B2C market with offerings such as Taobao and Tmall. Many put their trust in Aliexpress as they have a program called Buyer Protection. They guarantee that if your product does not arrive time, you will receive a full refund. The buyer does not have to do anything in order for this program to be effective (Weapons, Stuff & Mitchell, 2020).

Similarly, Amazon was founded in the garage of Bezos' rented home in Bellevue, Washington. Bezos' parents invested almost $250,000 in the start-up. Amazon has a seamless return policy, which is what causes so many consumers to be confident in giving them their credit card information. The policy states that a customer has thirty days to return a product if it is defective, damaged or the wrong product. Renewed products can be returned within ninety days of shipment ("Amazon Help: About Our Returns Policies", 2020).

Level Four Heading. E-commerce has a few advantages and disadvantages. In terms of advantages, it is convenient. Unlike brick and mortar businesses, it is accessible twenty-four hours a day.

It also has an increased selection. Stores that exist online offer their customers exclusive inventory that is unavailable elsewhere. Many businesses that operate both in store and online are able to offer their customers a wider range of products online.

However, e-commerce has a number of disadvantages. For starters, there is limited customer service. If a customer has questions while shopping online, they can’t ask an employee and receive an informative answer right away. They may occasionally be able to reach out to stores and receive responses after a certain amount of business days, but this is inconvenient for someone who needs to order a particular item right away.

There is also a lack of instant gratification since there is usually an allotted waiting time due to shipping. However, some retailers such as Amazon offer same day delivery. E-commerce products can also not match up to the expectations one has when they receive them since they were unable to touch or hold them beforehand ("Electronic Commerce (e-commerce)", 2020).
