Essay #4
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – We Should All Be Feminists
Born in Nigeria in 1977, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a renowned novelist delivered a
talk at TEDx Euston, a London conference focused on “the diversity, vibrancy and potential of
Africa” in 2012. In 2014, her TED Talk was adapted into a book. (Broadview Press, 2014, p.1).
Adichie theorizes that we should all be feminists. She talks about her experiences as a Nigerian
woman and believes that men and women deserve the same level of rights in all aspects of life.
Adichie uses numerous different types of expository writing to make her essay convincing to her
readers such as illustration, argument, and narration.
Adichie uses many examples to compare the behaviour towards woman versus towards
men. Woman are degraded if they are still unmarried by a certain age. Adichie stated that “Our
society teaches a woman at a certain age who is unmarried to see it as a deep personal failure.
While a man at a certain age who is unmarried has not quite come around to making his pick.”
(Adichie, 2012, p.4). She also stated that “we teach girls that they cannot be sexual
beings in the way boys are. If we have sons, we don’t mind knowing about
their girlfriends. But our daughters’ boyfriends? God forbid.” (Adichie, 2012,
p.5). Adichie uses the method of illustrations and uses specific examples and
situations to support her main message and to demonstrate that woman and
men do not have to same level of respect. The more specific the example,
the more effective it is in persuading the readers to believe what you are
conveying is accurate. During her TED Talk, she presents a personal
experience as she told the audience a time when she was out with a friend,
who was a male, and decided to tip a gentleman from her hard-earned
money for helping her find a parking spot. The gentleman said thank you to
her male friend instead of Adichie because he believed that whatever money
she had came from him. To automatically assume that whatever money
Adichie had come from her male friend is a disrespectful insinuation that
women need to rely on men for their income and cannot work for
themselves. These illustrations further demonstrate why the gender
inequality issue needs to improve. Her use of personal experiences allows
the audience to see things from her perspective and further relate to the
issue.
Adichie is persuasive within her text. She types of expository writing
she uses is argument because she is persuading the audience. The use of
Aristotle’s “modes for persuasion” strategies in her TED Talk allowed the
audience to be captivated by her words and arguments to believe what she
is trying to express. She uses these methods to appeal to the audience on an
