Key Points

- The four families of Western instruments are strings , woodwinds , brass , and per-

cussion

- String instruments (chordophones) are sounded by bowing and plucking

• Bowed strings include the violin, the viola, cello, and double bass

• Plucked strings include the harp and guitar

- Woodwind instruments (aerophones) include the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon,

and saxophone

- Brass instruments (aerophones) include the trumpet, French horn, trombone, and

tuba

- Percussion instruments include idiophones (xylophone, cymbals, triangle) and

membranophones (timpani, bass drum)

• Some are pitched (chimes), while others are unpatched (tambourine)

- Keyboard instruments, such as the piano and organ, do not fit nearly into the

Western classification system

String Instruments

- All chordophones

- Divided into instruments that are bowed and instruments that are plucked

- Bowed violin, viola, violoncello, double bass

- Violin : originally flourished in Italy from around 1600-

- Viola : larger than violin with lower range

- Violoncello : cello; lower range than viola and often plays melody

- Double Bass : contra bass/bass viol; lowest orchestral string instrument

- Can be played in many styles

• Legato, pizzicato, glissando, trill, staccato, vibrato, tremolo

- Capable of playing several notes simultaneously

• Double-stopping

• Triple/quadruple-stopping

• Mute

• Harmonics

- Plucked: harp, guitar

Woodwind Instruments

- Produce sound with a column of air vibrating within a pipe that has finger holes

along its length

• Mouth hole: flute

• Single reed: clarinet & saxophone

• Double reed: oboe & bassoon

- Flute : soprano of woodwind family

- Piccolo : highest pitched instrument in the orchestra

Brass Instruments

- Trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba

Percussion Instruments

- Divided into two categories: instruments capable of producing definite pitches &

those that do not

- Idiophones & membranophones

Keyboard Instruments

- Piano, organ, harpsichord
