Persuasive outline speech

Introduction:

  1. Attention Getter: How many of you talk on the phone while driving? How many of you even text while driving.
  2. Motivation for listening: To persuade my audience to not get distracted while driving so they will not get into a car accident
  3. Establish Credibility: Death may be a part of the normal, natural expected cycle of life but death by any sudden, unexpected , particulary car accident is not. These deaths bring significant challenges at personal, family and community levels.
  4. Thesis Statement: Although maintaining a communication while on the road is beneficial or important, nobody should put their life or others by texting while driving.
  5. Preview of Speech: Today I will persuade you and show you how dangerous using your phones while driving is. I am going to talk to you about texting while driving, phone conversations, driver inattentiveness.

Transition to body of speech: First I would like to inform you on how dangerous it is to text and drive.

I. Texting is the most alarming distraction because it involves manual, visual, and cognitive distraction simultaneously.

a) According to Texting and Driving Statistics: The minimal time your attention is off the road while texting is 5 seconds, which at a speed of 55mph you would have traveled the length of a football field without looking at the road.

b) Nowadays, we can find many studies that examine the effects of texting while driving. The one conclusion they all seem to have is that texting impairs a driver’s abilities.

c) One of the most obvious things that happen when a driver is texting while driving is that the driver would avert his or her eyes from the road for around five seconds. This is more than enough time for a person to run in front of the vehicle or for the vehicle in front of you to make a sudden stop or to miss seeing the light change.

  1. Despite all that, many people still text while driving ,Here are some frightening facts according to “2009 texting while driving”

a)

 Distracted driving is the number one killer of American teens.  A texting driver is 23 times more likely to get into a crash than a non- texter.  Texting while driving is 6 times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated.  Distracted driving causes 25% of all accidents, 1 million a year and 330,000 injuries per year. . b) The percentage of all traffic deaths caused by distracted driving rose from 11% in 1999 to 16% in 2008. Distracted-driving crashes are more common in urban areas.

c) Overall, 40% of all crashes happened in urban areas in 2008, up from 33% a decade earlier. Only one-third of Americans had a cell phone in 1999. By 2008, 91% of us did. Texting is on the rise, up from 9 billion messages a month in December ’05 to 110 billion in December ’08. According to

  1. According to Foles article “It Is Time For A Parental Control, No Texting While Driving Phone” a) Texting while driving causes 11 teen deaths every day. That’s 11 families, schools and communities that are forever missing children, classmates, teammates because they took that 5 seconds to text they’re running late, or whatever not-so- important message they sent. b) More than 22% of fatal accident are caused by teenager using their cellphones. Think they have confidence, mostly under 21.

  2. One main reason drivers are distracted is because drivers are not cognitive while driving.

a) Talking is the main cognitive distraction while driving because it deals with your mind focusing on what you are saying rather than paying attention to what you are seeing on the road.

b) There are 3 types of dangers while not being cognitive in the car.

Now that I have talked about to solutions that we can do to stop this epidemic, I will now discuss of some benefits.

III. Not texting while driving will benefits all of us

A. You won’t put innocent lives at risk 1) That simple action of "answering a quick text" or even glancing at a text, means that you are selfishly putting other people’s lives in danger. It is one thing to put your own life in danger, but it is unfair and unnecessary to risk the lives of others.

  1. You won’t crash your car and pay any damage.

B. Second, it will prevent you from getting a ticket or citation.

  1. It is often only a citation offense with a small fine, but a ticket is always a hassle. Several states are taking the issue so seriously that they brag about having "the toughest texting law in the country." New Jersey and New York will increase fines into the hundreds of dollars and increase points against the drivers license; with repeat offenders facing license suspension.

I. Conclusion: Today We discussed how dangerous texting and driving really is and why we should all be more careful while doing it. We went over solutions to resolve this epidemic. Persuaded you to refrain from texting and driving.

II. You never know what can happened

A. I encourage all of you to pay attention to the road no matter what.

  2. Many teens and young adults feel like nothing bad will ever happen to them and they can beat the odds but please don’t let that be you and become a statistic.. texting while driving!
