REPRODUCTION

Definition:

● Reproduction – the process by which human beings produce offspring

Antecedents:

● Functioning male and female reproductive organs ● Sperm and the egg ● Zygote ● Hormones

Defining Characteristics/Theoretical Links:

● Full term baby ● Working, functional reproductive organs ● Regular menstruation ● Gender

Consequences (Positive/Desired):

● Absence of STIs ● Absence of physical or hormonal abnormalities that impact reproductive organs ● Delivery of a healthy baby ● Full-term pregnancy ● Proper functioning of reproductive organs

Risk Factors/Barriers (if present):

● STIs ● Alcoholism or substance abuse ● Nutritional status ● Certain medications ● Teratogens – known to be harmful to babies when mom is pregnant ● Socioeconomic status ● Age ● Hormonal abnormalities

Consequences (Negative/Undesired):

● Inability to reproduce ● Stillbirths ● Abnormal reproductive organs ● Infertility ● Pain ● Preterm births
