RWJ County Health Rankings Malika Fernandes State- New Jersey County- Atlantic County Health Outcomes Premature death (Years of potential life lost before age 75 per 100,000 population (age-adjusted) Atlantic County- 7,500 per 100,000 population New Jersey- 5,500 per 100,000 population There are more premature deaths in Atlantic county as compared to New Jersey because although adjusted for differences in age-distribution and population size, rankings by state do not consider other state specific population characteristics that may affect the level of mortality. This may be why Atlantic county has a higher premature death rate. Low birthweight (Percentage of live births with low birthweight (< 2500 grams) Atlantic county- 8% New Jersey- 8% LBW rates are lowest among mothers ages 20-34 years. This tells us that the percentage of LBW is the same in Atlantic County and New Jersey because the average age of mothers is the same. Healthcare Mammography screening (Percentage of female Medicare enrollees ages 67-69 that receive mammography screening.) Atlantic County- 64% New Jersey- 61% New Jersey enacted a law ordering radiologists to raise the issue of breast density — which can make tumors harder to spot — in their patient reports. The law also orders insurance companies to boost coverage for ultrasound screenings, which can turn up cancers that mammograms miss. Therefore, insured people in Atlantic County have taken advantage of this and have screened for mammograms more than the overall New Jersey state. Diabetes monitoring (Percentage of diabetic Medicare enrollees ages 65-75 that receive HbA1c monitoring.) Atlantic County- 84% New Jersey- 85% There is a small difference in Diabetes monitoring between the overall New Jersey state and Atlantic County. The small difference could be due to access to diabetes monitoring services. There are projects such as the NJHA’s Health Research and Educational Trust that was implemented as a diabetes management project to address the challenges to diabetes care in minority communities. This affects the high percentage of diabetes monitoring. RWJ County Health Rankings Malika Fernandes Social and Economic Factors Violent Crime (Number of reported violent crime offenses per 100,000 population.) Atlantic County- 429 per 100,000 population New Jersey 280 per 100,000 population Atlantic County has more violent crime than New Jersey as a state because the employment and migration rates might affect the crime rate. So, New Jersey overall may have better employment which results in lower violent crime. Children in poverty (percentage of children under age of 18 in poverty) Atlantic County- 23% New Jersey- 15% Differences in age distributions contributes to differences in social and economic status across population groups. There is a higher percentage of children under the age of 18 in Atlantic County compared to New Jersey. Therefore, there are more children in poverty in Atlantic County compared to New Jersey. Physical Environment Severe Housing problems Atlantic county- 26% New Jersey- 23% The difference in housing problems roots from poor infrastructure in Atlantic county as compared to New Jersey. Therefore, New Jersey has less severe housing problems. Data Sources There are many data sources. Here are a few examples: Premature death: National Center for Health Statistics - Mortality Files Low birthweight: National Center for Health Statistics - Natality files Mammography screening: Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care Diabetes monitoring: Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care Violent crime: Uniform Crime Reporting - FBI Children in poverty: Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates
