Technology does not make us more alone Technology is a useful tool, and it supposed to help us to be more connected with each other, but people seem to make it look bad for many reasons. We can easily catch some moments like a group of friends checking their phones while hanging out. Most people on the subway also have their eyes on the screen, or people with their devices up to take pictures of a concert. In other words, people claim that technology is running the world. It makes us disconnected from others. For me, if that is what people are seeing, then they are not seeing enough. There are three main facts why technology does not make us alone: people lack self-control, technology is claimed to be fake because of how people using it, and people who use it are judged more than those who do not use it. It should be just us that make ourselves alone. It is our decision, not the technology. People seem to lack self-control, and they do not know how to keep themselves from temptation. Technology is not bad. A smart phone cannot make us use them. We are the ones who decide to use it, so we should not blame the technology but ourselves. There is a statement said that there will always be someone awake to “like” our latest status update on facebook, but when it comes to friends, quantity does not equal quality. I do not agree with the statement. The truth is, even if technology and social media do not exist, we are still have just a few close friends in real life. The more you grow older, the more friends you start to lose. I believe that everyone has a few real friends, the rest are just social friends. Social media is where you share our pictures or videos with people. It is just a tool that helps you to keep in touch with others. There is nothing to do with quality or quantity. People use technology for a variety of purposes. Some use it to avoid contact with people, and some use it to increase their contact with people. You cannot blame the technology for how people use it. Technology or social media are blamed to be fake about everything, and people start to only know the fake side of others. The fact that it allows us to control what we share. It appeals to our vulnerability and vanity. We can edit our words or photos to ensure we convey the image we want others to see, yet it also provides the illusion of friendship. Like I said, a person who choose to edit the photo and give others the fake image, she knows the consequences if someone finds out that she does not look like the image she posts on the social media. But it is still her choice, and the technology does not require her to photoshop her photos. Also, people on the social media have a choice not to trust her edited photos. Everyone can choose to lay down the masks, not only on the social media, but also in real life. Technology does not make us alone, as long as we know when to stop. People who use smartphone seem to be judged more than those who do not. I find myself surrounded by people who are staring at their screens instead of having face-to-face conversations, but I am fine with it. Not everyone has time to have a face-to-face conversations, and people should do what makes they feel comfortable. Some people choose to keep the moment in the head, while some people choose to keep it in a photograph. For me, I choose to keep the moment in my head, but that does not mean that people are not living their moments because they document everything through photographs. Maybe you do not see people enjoy the moments because they use the smartphones. It is your problem, not technology’s. Everything is never as it seems. Sometimes, I do not really get it when people say that the person who uses smartphone is enjoying the moment less than the person who does not use it.
