Self-Reflection Essay Could it be possible that you would need to be an active listener for effective communication to occur? Well, during this course I learned that there are many ways to effectively communicate. In my field of study which is teaching for secondary education requires effective communication on a massive level because the student’s livelihoods depends on it. The students will not be able to learn the information needed to be successful if there is a communication barrier. As an educator it is important to know how to effectively communicate, know your key strengths in communicating, and to know how to improve communication. These three keys will improve your classrooms communication skills.

Effective communication is a must in the education field. I learned during this course that there are so many ways to communicate outside of just verbal communication. We transmit information via nonverbal gestures such as facial expressions and body language. About 55% of our communication is nonverbal. The remainder, verbal communication, is made up of words 7% and tone 38% (Eyre, 2013 pg). Looking at those statistics should tell you that majority of the human population communicate non-verbally. So, with that being said effective and clear communication is very much needed in any work field.

The only way you or I can insure clear and effective communication is by knowing what are strengths are in communicating. I know my strength is listening. I am a very intensive listener and I believe that is one of the most effective ways to communicate. For example, if a

student ask me a question in regards to something pertaining to his or her personal life and they need advice, and I decide to half way listen and miss critical information. This will not only make the student feel like they are not supported, but it could also discourage that student from every asking questions because they may think adults do not listen. Communication rules the nation, but effective listening will help it properly function.

I know that every generation is different and use different methods of communication, but I there are ways to still improve even in the educational field. I plan on implemented a few techniques to improve the communication skills in the classrooms. One way I plan on doing that is by teaching the importance of active listening. I will also have activities that require for each student to communicate with one another. For example, we would have days were the students would role play or we would create a safe obstacle course and blindfold one student and have the others guide him/her throughout the course. These are just a few examples of games that will help develop and improve the student’s communication skills, but I will definitely do more.

Overall communication is needed for things to get done. It is vital that we all practice good forms of communication and be effective while doing it. So, learn to listen rather than just hearing someone speak because effective communication involves cooperation from both parties. It is not only my field that needs to know how to communicate effectively by knowing their strengths in communication, and how to improve communication skills and incorporate these skills in their business, but it is all areas in life that require effective communication.
