Introduction to Social Problems Child abuse is one of the many social problems in America, it is in the top five major social issues in America. The main causes of child abuse are disruption in the family an example would be divorce, lack of family planning, isolation and lack of support, financial pressures, and repeating what was seen growing up for example if the person was abused as a child they are more likely to grow to think its normal and how they should treat their kids as well.

Using sociological imagination child abuse is influenced by society because people turn the other cheek or assume someone else will call, they do not want the trouble of getting directly involved. Some people may even overlook some signs of child abuse thinking the problem is smaller than what it really is. Until society takes a stand and creates a voice for children of child abuse the social problem will never get better or go away. Child abuse happens more often than people think and sometimes causes an innocent child their life because no one reported it or stood up for them.

The theoretical perspective I think most aligns with the social problem of child abuse is the functionalist perspective. In the last paragraph that discusses functionalist perspective it says “Divorce could be seen as a social problem if those functions that are typically served by the family were to go unperformed, such as children not being raised properly to become

contributing members of society (Sullivan, 2007). Therefore, the functionalist perspective aligns good with child abuse because it is about family. The problems that happen in families can lead to child abuse such as divorce, or other issues within the family. Child abuse comes from how the person was raised or something they have been through the functionalist perspective thinks that this roots from family problems. How you raise them is what shapes them into the adult they are going to be.
