Planning a Developmentally Appropriate, Accessible Classroom Plan: Part 2

Sara Juston Grand Canyon University ECE-220: Typical and Atypical Behaviors Professor D. Dothard January 23, 2022

Planning a Developmentally Appropriate, Accessible Classroom: Part 2 For my classroom design, I chose to create a Pre-K classroom. Throughout this classroom you will find different areas of the room that are a necessity in the early childhood years. There is a dramatic play area, to promote social emotional skills. Large group rug for promoting their knowledge and social skills. A shelved off area for building and using their cognitive skills. And an art center for letter them use imagination and to be creative. How will you ensure accessibility for all of your students? It is important that your classroom is accessible for all students. You need to observe your students’ needs first. If you have a student that is in a wheelchair or that is visually impaired, then you need to be sure that your classroom is set up appropriately for these students. This could mean physically moving the classroom around to fit their needs. Ensure that there are no barriers that could prevent a student from easily moving around the room. (Lohmann, 2017) If you have a student with a severe language delay, then providing pictures for them to use for communicating simple commands. Providing a pictured schedule or picture tasks. Most importantly, treat all students with love and respect. Accommodate for the needs of all your students. How will you maintain appropriate supervision over your entire classroom, even during small group activities? It is very important to always maintain appropriate supervision throughout the classroom. Teachers must know where all the children are at all times. With the design I came up with, there is very limited blind spots in the classroom. The shelving is all lower so that I could easily see over them. I have also made the classroom open planned. This will help to be able to see the whole classroom no matter where I am standing or sitting in the classroom. During small group time, it is important to have the teacher body facing the whole class, even though you aren’t

the most. With a Pre-k classroom not being your typical classroom with desks, it was more difficult to find a space for individual learning. I have provided a soft center, as a calm down are if they are needing to take a minute to themselves. Everything in the classroom would be child size, this would be promoting independence and self-help skills with everything being accessible to them. Child sized furniture promotes self-confidence which is important with their overall growth and development. (Kaplan, n.) The large group area would be where the students come all together to discuss the topic of the lesson plan. This is where they get engaged and further their knowledge and share their interests with their classmates.
