Vegetarian diet – healthy or not?
“Nothing will benefit health or increase chances of survival on earth as the evolution to a
vegetarian diet” as quoted by Albert Einstein, a famous scientist and supporter of the concept of
Vegetarianism who became a vegetarian only in the last year of his life. The notion of vegetarian
diet being unnecessary and unhealthy still persists in many cultures in the world, however,
through nutritional science and with the recent scientific studies, which are done to check if
maintaining a vegetarian diet is healthier in comparison to having a meat diet, the benefits of
complying to a strict vegetarian diet outweighs its disadvantages. People have started to realize
that quality of life can be dramatically changed by taking care of their diet and lifestyle. There is
a major shift of the society’s attention towards Vegetarianism, which is a better option for having
a healthier diet and attaining a healthy lifestyle by renouncing meat or any other animal products
from their diet. People just cannot ignore numerous health and physical benefits of being a
vegetarian, which generates a self satisfaction in individuals to have a healthy lifestyle.
To start off, the most significant benefit of having a vegetarian diet is the health benefit.
One of the advantages of a vegetarian diet is that there is a lower risk of obesity, hypertension
and heart diseases. Animal foods contain high amounts of saturated fats as well as protein, which
accumulate in the arteries, blocking the blood flow to and from the heart, causing heart attacks
and high blood pressure. Vegetarians also have a lower chance of developing diabetes and cancer
especially breast cancer in women and prostrate cancer in men. According to the National
Academy of Sciences, “…evidence from both epidemiological and laboratory studies suggest
that high protein intake may be associated with an increased risk of cancers at certain sites”
(National Academy of Sciences 1982). There is a greater chance of preventing and even
reversing or curing these diseases as vegetarian diets have lower saturated fat content. Fruits and
vegetables containing fiber and antioxidants found in whole grains, fruits and vegetables
promote digestion and healthy skin, nails and hair. Vitamins and minerals found in fruits and
vegetables also contribute to various beneficial protective effects.
