Social Relationships

How do some of the roles that people have change with aging; especially those that are associated with relationships: siblings, grandparenting, husband and wife, etc.

Understand how family demographics have changed over the last 50 years. Be aware of the trends and terms used to describe these changing trends.

Be familiar with the importance of social support and intimacy throughout the life course.

Be familiar with the social support system of LGBT elders.

Know some reasons in which grandparents become caregivers.

Be familiar with the concept of grandparents raising grandchildren.

 10% of all children lived with a grandparent in 2008  19% of children living with grandparents live in poverty  Half of children living with grandparents are 6 or younger  50% raising grandchildren are 60+

Define reciprocal exchange.

Define intimacy at a distance. 

Intimacy and Sexuality

Have an understanding of the role of sexuality in elders’ lives and the related issues.

 Sexuality is one way to express intimacy o defined as: the quality or state of being sexual o a combination of sex drive, sexual acts, and the psychological aspects of relationships, emotions, and attitudes

What are some of the benefits of sexual activity in later life?

 Enhanced quality of life  Increased self-esteem  Sense of belonging  Decreased depression  Maintain overall fitness  Raises heart and breathing rates  Restores energy  Inspires healing  Expression of intimacy

What are some of the barriers or risks to it?

 Lack of a partner prevents many older adults from being sexually active  Health factors  Sexual health being discussed with doctor  Living arrangements  Sexual invisibility  STD’s

Know the issues facing LGBT elders.

 Social security laws  Medicaid laws  Tax laws  Hospital and nursing homes visitation policies  Social isolations and ageism even from the LGBT community

Trends in STD/STI's in older adults.

 In 2005 people aged 50+ accounted for o 15% of newly diagnosed cases of HIV/AIDS o 29% of all persons living with AIDS  Ohio study found that 27% of HIV infected men and 35% of HIV infected women over 50 sometimes have sex without using a condom  Less likely to use condoms  Lack of screening for sexual problems can increase risk of a disease going for years  Immune system naturally becomes less effective as people age

o May be related to telomeres shortening

Define senescence.  

 Biological aging is the gradual deterioration of function characteristic of most complex lifeforms

Be familiar with the impact of exercise on the aging experience and the trends of exercising in later life (do people exercise as they age?).

Know risk factors that can negatively impact physical health.

Know the factors that can promote health in older adults.

Successful Aging

Be familiar with the elements of successful aging as defined by Rowe & Kahn and ways to age successfully.

 Minimal or no loss in physical, social, cognitive aspects of life  Intersection of o avoiding disease & disability o maintenance of mental and physical health o continuing engagement in life

What are some common criticisms of successful aging as defined by Rowe & Kahn?

 Not applicable to all o theory for the healthy & wealthy  Individual control o those not meeting deemed unsuccessful & at fault  Definition requires all 3 so a person cannot “age successfully” if all 3 not present  Increase judgement and bias against disabled  Ignores impact of diversity

What are the keys to aging well according to Valliant?

 not smoking or quitting early  ability to take life’s ups and downs in stride  absence of alcohol abuse  healthy weight  solid marriage  physical activity  years of education

According to Valliant, what attributes do people who age well have?

 orientation toward the future  gratitude forgiveness, optimism  empathy  ability to reach out

What are some criticisms of Valliant's theory about aging well?

 Bias due to sampling o not representative o illustrates outcomes under ideal conditions  Individual control  Ignores impact of diversity

What is a centenarian? What are common characteristics shared by centenarians?

 Centenarians: persons who live to be 100 years or more o 90+% report good health until 90s o 15+% live independently o 90% women  19% had children at 40+ o Few smoked o Few were obese o Handle stress and change well

Be familiar with how older adults define successful aging.

Define resilience.

 The ability to adapt and endure or even thrive under difficult situations  Turn adversity into an opportunity for growth and well-being  Not contingent on physical health  Supported by community and relationships

 83% want to live for the rest of their lives right where they live now

What is aging in place?

 Includes desires to: o not move o to be independent where you live o to have services you need available
