“ A Teacher I’ll Never Forget ”

I. Introduction A. Mary introduces her memorable teacher by naming six facts about her. 1. Taught at the Texas School for the Deaf-third or fourth grade. 2. Very short 3. Hair was long, wore in braids 4. Name sign- “I” on side of chin 5. Allergic to chalk dust -- would giver her headache 6. Had stool under desk II. Body A. Three ways the teacher compensated for her height.

  1. Box for her feet-under desk

  2. Wore hair in braids to be taller

  3. Had a stool for the blackboard B. How the teacher prepared and taught English

  4. She came in early - wrote sentences on board/pull down screen

  5. English lessons would show sentences in English word order

  6. If kids not understand- she would explain in ASL C. Three ways the teacher dealt with her allergy to chalk dust.

  7. Kids would wipe the board with a wet rag

  8. When she had a headache girl would press her temples with her palms

  9. If that wouldn’t help a boy would use finger tips D. What happened one time when the teacher left the classroom

  10. Kids played

  11. One kid was a “look out” for teacher

  12. When seen teacher ‘she is coming’

  13. Kids returned to seats ‘act normal’

  14. Teacher enters room and told the kids she knew that they were playing
