Traditional Change Theories
The Lewin Model
- 3 steps: used for most situations
1. Unfreezing- means that the current or old ways of doing things is weak, people begin to see
that things should be done differently, and change is needed for a specific reason
2. Moving to a new level- intervention or change is introduced, the benefits and disadvantages
are discussed
3. Refreeze – the new way of doing things gets built into the people’s routines
The Lippitt’s Model
- Good for changing a process
- Seven stages of this model:
1. Diagnosing the problem
2. Assessing the motivation for change
3. Assessing the change agent motivation and resources
4. Selecting progressive change objectives
5. Choosing an appropriate role for the change agent
6. Maintaining the change after it has been started
7. Terminating helping relationship
- Communication needs to be effective for all of these phases to happen
The Havelock Model
- Used for educational or cultural changes
- The planning stages include:
1. Building a relationship
2. Diagnosing the problem
3. Acquiring resources
- The moving stage includes:
4. Choosing the solution
5. Gaining acceptance
- The refreezing stage includes:
6. Stabilizing and self-renewing
- For these steps to be able to happen, there has to be careful planning and including the people
that get affected by the change
- The person responsible for planning and implementing the change encourages the people
affected by the change to participate
