Running head: [SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS]

Introduction The purpose of this essay is to inform the reader on why, despite all training, the number of sexual harassment and assault cases continues to increase. Since 2008, the Army has utilized Army Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention Program (SHARP). Soldiers take SHARP training every year. Nevertheless, sexual assault cases are still increasing. E-5s can help educate their Soldiers about the sexual violence happening in our Army. Trainings Soldiers take SHARP training annually. SHARP is training that educates Soldiers on the prevention and awareness of sexual violence. SHARP is an efficient program if Soldiers actively participate in reducing sexual violence offenses. Because of SHARP, Soldiers know that sexual violence happens within our ranks. SHARP has changed over the years, but its focus has never changed. SHARP is a program that puts the victim first. When Soldiers take a SHARP class, they learn that offenders of sexual violence can be anyone in the Army. Offenders can be their best friend, their battle, or their leadership. Soldiers also understand that anyone can be a victim. Being a victim of sexual assault does not discriminate based on gender. Increasing Cases SHARP cases are increasing from more Soldiers reporting their assaults. Unfortunately, many sexual assault cases still go unreported. Victims may not report their assaults for many reasons. One reason is that previously Commanders were responsible for reprimanding the offenders. This resulted in most offenders getting minimal to no punishment for their crimes. Which most likely led victims to lose faith in

the reporting system. With SHARP’s new objective, offenders now will face penalties under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) (taskandpurpose). Offenders receiving a UCMJ can help victims become more confident in reporting their assaults to SHARP. E-5’s Making a Difference Unfortunately, sexual assaults may never go away. We are all in this class to become leaders. As new E-5s, we might not have all the answers to prevent sexual violence. However, we can make a difference by educating our Soldiers about SHARP and sexual violence. We must be more conscious that these sexual offenses may include one of us or even one of our Soldiers. There is no formal method to avoid becoming a victim of these situations. Still, we must be there for our soldiers and prepare to assist soldiers who have been victims of sexual violence. Our focus should be on educating our warriors to be more mindful of these occurrences. It will take an Army to prevent sexual assaults with the help of SHARP and our Soldiers working together. Conclusion In conclusion, sexual assaults may never end ultimately. However, every Soldier can take part in eliminating these offenses. SHARP is a program to prevent and help make awareness among our soldiers. Sexual assault cases are increasing because SHARP gives victims more confidence in reporting their assaults. E-5s can help make a difference in educating Soldiers on SHARP and sexual violence in our Army.
