In Module Three, you discussed the ways healthcare performance can be measured through examining quality, equity, and efficiency in the healthcare system. You were introduced to the concept of the Quadruple Aim, an extension of the Triple Aim as defined by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). The Quadruple Aim is focused on improving outcomes and care for individuals, providing better care for populations, lowering per capita costs in our healthcare system, and improving the work life of healthcare providers and staff.

In this module, you will examine some of the recent initiatives to improve performance in the healthcare system. In 2001, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued the foundational report “Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the Twenty-First Century,” which highlighted six key dimensions related to quality care. Healthcare should be safe, effective, efficient, equitable, timely, and patient-centered (STEEEP). These dimensions have formed the basis for numerous quality and payment reform strategies implemented since its release.

Furthermore, this report has led to the creation of the National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) and quality measures that drive value-based purchasing programs and payment reform. It is also the guiding force behind establishing the Triple, and now Quadruple Aim. As you complete this module, consider the following questions:

  • How can quality be measured in a meaningful way for the improvement of each STEEEP dimension?
  • Why is it important to reduce hospital readmissions?
  • How do care coordination efforts improve outcomes?
  • Why is access to care important?

Promoting Interoperability

Good evening,

The topic that I was assigned was Promoting Interoperability. In the research, that I completed on my topic it shows that in 2011, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to encourage eligible clinicians, hospitals, and critical access hospitals (CAHS) to adopt, implement, upgrade, and use certified electronic health records called (EHR) technology. Also, they want to promote the quality payment program, these programs help to support high quality and high value care using certified health IT.

Interoperability solutions in healthcare today are improving the patient experience by streamlining care delivery and giving providers strong picture of patient’s needs. Theses advancements with EHR give patients the no longer need to fill out forms over and over again, give the provider access to their medical records regardless where the patient receiving care, and healthcare providers can deliver faster treatment plans to other providers.

It shown in recent studies that the time and capacity spent by our healthcare workers on administrative tasks is the one of the leading drivers behind staggering cost of care delivery today. It shown that organizing and presenting the right data like using the right EHR, can boost efficiency across an entire organization and improve the quality of care being delivered, leading to massive cost savings and more efficient workflows.

The use of the EHR can submit point of care authorization submissions by clicking a button, instead of faxing it or mailing it out to carrier which can delay getting the results that the providers need.
