BUS210: Managing and Leading in Business

Dr. Tomecca Williams September 27, 2020

In this reflection I will be discussing the organizational culture of the company I currently work for, DST Restaurant Management. We are a franchisee of McDonald’s and operate eight McDonald’s restaurants in the Ogden, Utah area.

The mission of DST Restaurant Management is to be our customers favorite way and place to work, eat and drink. Our vision is to operate our restaurants in a way that, no matter what day or time, our friends and family could stop by and we would be proud of the experience they would receive. Our mission and vision are supported by our values, which include: People, Service, the McDonald’s System, Ethics, Giving Back, Profitability, and Continuous Improvement [ CITATION Tro20 \l 1033 ].

Our organization started humbly, with our two Owner-Operators, Darrell and Shari, a husband and wife team, running the business operations out of their home while they grew the business and obtained more restaurants. There are many aspects of our organizational culture today that come from the ultra-small business structure that once was. As the company has expanded, there have been some growing pains, but as an employee who now works out of the business office and has a good understanding of what makes us tick, I have concluded a few things that contribute to our culture. Some of the assumptions in our organization are that you will be fast, work together, share what you know, do your best, and step up and lead. These assumptions are engrained in what we do and what we expect out of our people. I have come to this conclusion after eight and a half years of working for this company, holding various positions, and working closely with our owners.

We demonstrate our values in what we do each day – there is a reason that People is our # value. I have seen our owners each step in and roll up their sleeves when the restaurants get busy. They are not afraid to step in and help when the team needs it.

I believe many of the traits I have formed as a leader are thanks to the company culture we have in my workplace. I have a strong preference for variety as a leader, a trait which I feel is in perfect alignment with the size of the organization and our culture – we adapt to change and overcome our obstacles. As a leader, I also have a high level of agreeableness and willingness to help others, which fits well with our culture – we roll up our sleeves and help others when needed. One of our assumptions in our culture is that we will work fast – as part of that, you have to be able to stay calm in stressful situations and think rationally, which I am well equipped for having low levels of neuroticism. Overall, I believe my company culture has helped shape me into the leader that I am, and I would like to think that my leadership has helped the company be successful as well.
