Kamala,

I agreed that GM’s autocratic organizational structure and leadership’s inaction to address major issues led the company down a path of unethical business practices. You point out a good point to have learned throughout this course: identifying what you do not want from an employer, as well as what you do want. I think this is an important factor to consider when looking into a new job, especially during a time like right now, when the job market is tipping in the favor of candidates, who can be more selective with the company they choose to work for. I am sad to hear of the operations at your previous job – I am sure that was incredibly disheartening to be a part of, and difficult to leave the residents you cared for. It sounds to me as though that company also used an autocratic method, and I hope they are able to make a cultural shift before something awful forces them to.

Kiersten,

Although I decided GM operated under an autocratic organizational structure, I can understand your view of a hierarchical structure, particularly from the view point of the 15 employees who were terminated following the ignition switch malfunction coming to light. I appreciate that you point out the importance of making effective change – often people and companies do not do the work to ensure the changes they make have resulted in the intended outcomes, which is essentially a waste of time. What ways do you think a company can improve lines of communication throughout the various levels of their structure? Also, how should companies decide whether the changes they implement have been effective enough? Congratulations on entering the contractor side, do you find you still have to employ communication networks to perform your work well?
