Rhetorical Meme Analysis

Naisha Patel

The meme I’ve chosen for this assignment is:

Describing the picture itself, we can see a guy holding his girlfriends hand and as he walks by another girl, he turns around to take another look at her seemingly being interested in her, as his girlfriend stares at him with a shocking facial expression looking at him concentrating on the other girl.

Now making this picture relatable to the meme, the description of the meme is that the Indian Film Industry also known as Bollywood loves to make fantasy movies which have Item Numbers (An Item Song), Visual effects (VFX) and specially loves to use the word “Bhai” meaning “Big Brother” or just “Brother in English language, rather than sticking to the Hollywood standard which have a well written plot, well fleshed out characters and realistic situations. While the targeted audience of this meme is tired of Bollywood repeating the same techniques again and again.

Considering the Rhetorical Triangle, and also addressing who the audience and speaker might be, what the intended message might be, and what forms of persuasion are being used (ethos, pathos, and logos), here are persuasions of this meme:

Speaker

Ethos: The author or editor in this case is trying to convey a message related to how the Indian Film Industry also known as Bollywood loves to make fantasy movies which have Item Numbers (An Item Song), Visual effects (VFX) and specially loves to use the word “Bhai” meaning “Big Brother” or just “Brother in English language, rather than sticking to the Hollywood standard which have a well written plot, well fleshed out characters and realistic situations.

Audience

Pathos: The audience in this case is the general population of people who watch films or movies, the author or editor is trying to convey this message to the general audience of movies or cinema that the Bollywood Industry is so focused on making Fantasy movies which have unrealistic storylines or scripts, a lot of visual effects and use the word “Bhai” a lot.

Message

Logos: The author or editor’s message to the audience is to make them realize that Bollywood Industry should really be focusing on learning somethings from Hollywood and stop being too mainstream on using the same techniques in its almost every single movie, as now the Bollywood audience is tired of seeing the same techniques being used in their films time after time and that people want a change in Bollywood storylines and enjoy a new set of techniques being used in their country’s movies.
