While reading the rest of the syllabus on pages 3-10, take note of the policies below numbered 1-6; there will be about 3 questions

on Exam 1 about the syllabus and one syllabus question on Exams 2, 3 and 4 as well.

NOTE: IMPORTANT: there are two sections of BIOL 3332 in the Spring – YOU MUST ONLY ATTEND THE SECTION YOU ARE ENROLLED

IN AND NOT SWITCH BETWEEN SECTIONS. Why? If you attend a section you are not enrolled in, your clicker responses WILL NOT be

received not WILL NOT be allowed to participate in teamwork activities during class – this is final, there are no exceptions to this

policy.

  1. GRADE BREAKDOWN FOR THE COURSE  page 4; grade calculation  page 6
  2. CLICKERS (page 5 and bottom of page 6 through 7) a. Only hand-held clickers are used to earn points in class, NOT mobile devices

b. 100% attendance DOES NOT equal a clicker grade of 100 (see page 4 for details)

c. Forgot clicker or not functioning = no points that day; whatever the excuse d. Everyone has three free passes, once these are used up then missed days >3 will be zeros.

e. Clicker issues of any kind  consult clicker support in CBB room 202, NOT ME. My role in the clicker process – the receiver in my USB port obtains your clicker input; after class I upload your points from the Turning Technologies database to Blackboard with the click of a button, that’s all I do. I know nothing regarding the software, hardware functioning of the device, or any issues that may occur  go to CBB 202 for help.

f. Regularly check your clicker points on Blackboard; if you have issues, go to CBB 202. You must have all clicker issues resolved by April 24th.

  1. EXAMS/QUIZZES (page 4-5)

a. Missed exams – see page 3; missed exam because you forgot your exam time/day – if a make-up is given, it will incur an automatic 25% reduction from the score.

b. If you have a valid excuse – prove it with documentation

c. No dropped exams; all are counted equally

d. There are no make-ups for Blackboard quizzes – these are optional and are for extra credit only.

  1. IN-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS/TEAMWORK (page 6)

a. No make-ups for missed teamwork regardless of the excuse; another completed teamwork exercise may substitute for the missed one, however this may only be done one time.

  1. HOMEWORK (SMARTWORK) (page 3)

a. Pay attention to deadlines when homework assignments must be completed; late work is accepted up to 3 days past the due date with a 10% per day penalty – regardless of the excuse.

  1. EMAIL (page 10)

a. In order to receive a response via email from me please insert “BIOL 3332_MW” in the subject line

b. Make sure you are able to receive emails from me at your uh address; I email the class fairly regularly. A number of email providers have been blocking or throttling emails from uh. This creates problems for attempting to communicate with students. Check your UH email directly at: email.uh/owa/auth/logon.aspx; if you have issues consult UHIT in the MD Anderson Library basement, room 56.

lectures are recorded – what you hear in class and see on the projector screen is captured and available for later viewing. Though attendance is not taken, invariably those that do come to class regularly perform better than those that do not come to class.

Graded Work and Grading Policies

All students are responsible for completing all graded work and will be graded according to the policies in this syllabus, even if a student registers for this course after the first class day. The final grade for this course will be calculated from the following scores shown to the right.

The tentative grading scale for final grades is as follows:

>59 = D >79 = B-

>66 = D+ >82 = B

>69 = C- >86 = B+

>72 = C >89 = A-

>76 = C+ >92 = A

Final grades may be adjusted to achieve a fair and reasonable distribution of grades.

Exams

Exams are worth 72% of your final grade: there are four exams, each worth 18%; the fourth exam is taken during the final exam period after classes have ended - it is not a comprehensive exam. Exam 4 comprises all information covered after Exam 3. Exams will cover material presented during lectures; including in-class assignments (see p 4). NOTE: not all material comes from the textbook, I have other sources of information and these will be made available to you. Exams consist of about 33-36 questions in the form multiple choice which may also include diagrams/pictures/data, and some true/false questions. You will have 60 minutes to complete each exam. Exams are taken at the CASA Testing Center; details on CASA are described below.

Students must take all four exams; there are no dropped exams, and there are no make-ups for exams. The only exceptions to this policy will be in the case of a verifiable medical condition or other emergency; I must be notified (e-mail, phone call) within 24 hours of the missed exam date in order to be considered for taking a make-up exam. If you have a valid excuse for missing an exam, then at my discretion, I may allow a make-up exam to be given. Excuses of a purely social nature will not be accepted. The make-up exam will be in the form of my choosing and may comprise short answer questions or brief essay questions, in addition to multiple choice questions. I

 Missing an exam because you forgot your reservation time and/or day: if I decide to allow you to take a make-up exam, there will be an automatic 20% reduction from your make-up exam score.

Please familiarize yourself with the University policies on cheating and academic honesty outlined in the University of Houston Student Handbook. Cheating during the exam will not be tolerated. Demonstrable incidents of cheating could result in the student receiving a zero for the exam or a grade of “F” for the course.

Exams and quizzes are not curved, but final grades are curved. At the end of the semester, the final grade averages for each student are subjected to a statistical analysis which yields a curve. From this final analysis, letter grade cut-offs are determined (C-, C, C+, B-, B, etc) and final grades are then assigned. The exam and quiz dates are detailed in the tables.

Extra Credit Quizzes

Four (4) quizzes as specified in the exam & quiz schedule below; are provided for extra credit opportunities. Quizzes are taken on the Blackboard; there is no sign-up or registration for quizzes One can earn 0 point for each quiz passed with a score of 70% or better; a maximum of 2 points can be earned. These points will be added to the final grade at the end of the semester. Quizzes will be available on the scheduled day up until 11:59PM on that same day. For each quiz, there is a 60-75-minute time limit and one attempt in which to complete the quiz. Quizzes consist of around 15-25 questions which can be in a variety of forms: multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, etc; some questions may include diagrams and/or data graphs.

─ NOTE: take the quizzes during the allotted time frame; quizzes will not be allowed to be taken once the deadline has passed - no exceptions. Also, there are no make-ups for quizzes. These quizzes are completely optional; not taking a quiz, or scoring <70% will not adversely affect your final grade at all.

Attendance/Participation  this is your clicker grade

Attendance and participation (15% of final grade) are assessed via hand-held student response pads, i., “clickers”. Clicker questions will appear at different times during the lecture; you must use your clicker to answer these questions. A maximum of 3 lecture sessions may be missed for any reason with no excuse necessary. NOTE: the points for the free passes will be figured into the clicker grade at the end of the semester, by the following formula: total possible clicker points for the semester divided by the total number of clicker sessions = average clicker points per session; multiply this latter value by the number of days you missed (max of three); add this to your total clicker points earned. If your absences exceed the limit of three then you do not get any credit for those days, they count as zeros. NOTE: the three free passes are not extra credit that can be added to your clicker grade if you have no absences. Detailed information on clickers regarding purchase and registration is provided on page 5.

Please take note of the following:

─ It is your responsibility to bring the clicker to class; if you forget, you will not be eligible to earn points, including attendance. I do not accept paper submission of responses to clicker questions - only clicker responses are accepted.

─ When a clicker questions are presented, one has a limited time to answer, generally one minute; it is your responsibility to pay attention and to respond in the allotted time, if you do not, you will not get credit - there are no acceptable excuses for failing to respond and there are no “do overs” (except in case of a technical glitch). ─ It is your responsibility to have a functional clicker; if you use it and it does not work - check the batteries. ─ It is your responsibility to properly register your clicker - unregistered clickers have no name assigned to them, so I do not to whom the points belong to, and thus you will not earn any points.

Performance on the clicker questions will count toward EXTRA CREDIT added to the final semester grade. Performance is scored as follows: 2 pts for a correct answer on the first try, 1 pt for an incorrect answer on the first try. For more demographic type questions where this is no correct answer, 2 points are given for the response. In addition to performance points, attendance is scored as one point per class attended provided you respond to at least one-half of the clicker questions presented during class. The total number of clicker points will be calculated as an overall percentage, and extra credit will be added to the final course grade on the following scale:

 clicker score ≥ 50% - 0 points • clicker score ≥ 80% - 1 points

  • clicker score ≥ 70% - 1 points • clicker score ≥ 90% - 2 points

IMPORTANT #1: realize that having a perfect attendance record will not equate to a clicker grade of 100%; clicker performance is based on both attendance and answering questions. If you are regularly attending class, but have a subpar clicker grade, that means you are incorrectly answering a good number of clicker questions – this should alert you to pick it up! Pay attention in class and be prepared for class ahead of time – i., STUDY!

IMPORTANT #2: regularly check your clicker points on Blackboard; if something is not right, i., you use your clicker in class and respond to questions, but see no clicker points on Blackboard – GO IMMEDIATELY to CBB 202 for help from the clicker support people. NOTE: any issues with your clicker points must be resolved by Friday, April 24th; failure to do so means your clicker points will be whatever has uploaded from the turning point site to Blackboard throughout the semester.

Any student caught using another student’s clicker device in their absence will be found in violation of course policy and UH Academic Honesty policy.

 New students: We will use Turning Technologies response system and you can purchase a Clicker bundle (1 Clicker + 1-year Subscription) at UH Campus Store. It costs $49 plus tax, ISBN: 9781934931684. You can use your book loan to buy the Clicker bundle through the UH Campus Store. Creating Turning Account and Registering

Clicker/Subscription

 New students need to create a Turning account and register Clicker/Subscription.  Current students need to check your Turning account.

Student Clicker Support:

─ Email: clicker@uh or web: uh/clicker. ─ Please use the weblink posted on the Blackboard site titled “Link to clicker help”. This will take you to the UH website (uh/clicker). Here you will find information and links to specific documents that provide instruction on: creating a Turning account, registering your Clicker/License through Blackboard, how to use a clicker or mobile app in class, access FAQS and student supports. A screenshot of this website is shown above.

─ For any issues with clickers  send an email to clicker@uh if you are unable to solve the issue via the uh/clickerwebsite

─ The office of UH IT Support Center can assist students with their non-working clickers. The UH IT office information is as follows:

i. Office Location: 58 MD Anderson Library - Technology Commons area accessible from the back entrance of MD Anderson Library Office Visit Hours: 8 am to 8 pm daily (except University holidays). Phone: 713-743-14 11 Email: support@uh

ii. IMPORTANT: If you encounter problems with your RF-LCD clicker even after the one-year warranty period has expired; you can still bring your non-working clicker to UH IT Support Center.

CASA Testing Center

Exams are taken either at the CASA Testing Center in room 221 of Garrison Gymnasium (bldg. 532 on the campus map), in CBB, the Classroom and Business Building room 242 (bldg. 499 on the campus map), OR in Agnes Arnold Hall (AAH) in room 101. Students are required to sign-up for time slots prior to the exam; the sign-up period begins two weeks before the test date. In order to reserve a time, slot you must go to the website casa.uh/casa/ and register so that you can obtain a log in ID and password. Once you have done this you can then log in and select available time slots. As mentioned previously, start signing up early so that you can get the time you want; DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. Each exam will be administered over 2 days, so there will be plenty of space available; failure to take the test because there was no available time is not a valid excuse and a zero will be given for that exam. Also note, as of fall 2008 CASA additionally requires students to have a finger scan done as an extra security precaution. This must be done prior to the exam and is carried out at the CASA testing center as well; if you have already completed the finger scan last semester, you DO NOT have to repeat the procedure.

For the particular day & time you take the exam, arrive 15-30 minutes prior to your start time and bring your student ID; if you arrive late (a minute or more), CASA will not allow you to take the exam.

So, to summarize the procedure: (1) register on the CASA website now, (2) get the finger scan if needed, (3) when opened, sign-up early for time slots, and (4) bring your student ID and arrive early prior to your start time.

Undergraduate Student Success Center

The LAUNCH program provides free tutoring as well as academic counseling and workshops to enhance your learning skills. For additional information, contact LSS at (713) 743-5411 or come by room N109 Cougar Village (bldg. 563).

Tips for Success:

  1. Attend class and ask questions. You chose this class at this time and it is costing someone money for you to be here. Pay attention. No social networking, no texting, no phone calls, no chatter. Respect your fellow students and yourselves.

  2. Lecture notes will be posted on Blackboard before class. The assigned chapter(s) should be read before lecture. This strategy will help you follow the lectures and enhance your ability to master the information and concepts needed to do well on the exams.

  3. Take good notes. I will try to keep the material organized using topic headings and outlines. I will also help you note important points. Most of what is covered on your exams will come from the lectures.., really.

  4. Read your textbook. Minimally, read what is covered in lecture. Better yet, read each chapter completely while focusing on lecture topics. I will add supplemental material to read as appropriate current articles or information comes available. These will be posted on Blackboard.

  5. Pay close attention to graphs, figures, and pictures that illustrate concepts and ideas. Develop the ability to use these devices as critical summaries of information.

  6. Lectures are recorded, but this is not an online course; use it as a tool to augment your regular studying routine. The lecture material is designed to help you to understand what is covered in the text and to clarify some of the more difficult concepts. Students who attend the lectures invariable do better in the course. Lastly, technical problems may occur that prevent a lecture from being recorded, or affect the outcome of the recorded lecture. In my experience, however, such occurrences have

E mails

 UH email blocks. As you likely know, Yahoo, Google, Comcast, AOL (RIP), Hotmail and a number of other email providers have been blocking or throttling emails from uh on and off since October. This creates problems for me attempting to communicate with students. A very large proportion of students have their UH email forwarded to an off-campus account. Thus, even emails sent to UH accounts will not be seen by the intended student recipient. UH is working to resolve this matter (currently, I believe the problem exists only for Yahoo and Comcast email accounts), but in the meantime, I strongly suggest that you avoid these problems in a few ways:

A) Check their UH email directly at: email.uh/owa/auth/logon.aspx

B) Configure their email client so that all accounts (e., yahoo, gmail, uh) appear separately, rather than being forwarded to a single account. If they need help with this, they should consult UHIT in the MD Anderson Library basement, room 56 (uh/infotech/services/accounts/email/).

NOTE: UH policy states that all required written notices shall be addressed to the student via their UH email. Notices properly addressed and so sent shall be presumed to have been received by the student. Thus, you are responsible for the content in emails sent to your UH account, regardless if your external (non-UH) email provider filters or blocks them. Emails lost to external providers shall not be used as a justification to claim faculty are unresponsive, to appeal grades, etc.

 Emails to me: in order to receive a response via email from me please insert “BIOL 3332_MW” in the subject line; I have 800+ students in four different courses and cannot spend time looking up in which class a student is enrolled. Also, I do not respond to emails that ask when exams or quizzes are occurring - this information is posted on Blackboard, just look it up yourself.

Late Registrants to the Course

Students that register for this course late (or re-register if dropped because of financial aid issues) will be given no special consideration, remediation, tutorials, etc., and that such students are responsible for all course content, meeting course deadlines, etc.

UH CAPS Statement

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) can help students who are having difficulties managing stress, adjusting to college, or feeling sad and hopeless. You can reach CAPS (uh/caps) by calling 713-743-5454 during and after business hours for routine appointments or if you or someone you know is in crisis. No appointment is necessary for the “Let's Talk” program, a drop-in consultation service at convenient locations and hours around campus.
