Katie Gamble Values Reflection Paper People’s core values can change throughout time and are different from person to person. Core values are the fundamental beliefs of a person that guides them through life. My personal core values would be compassion, respect, and loyalty. All three of these are very important to me and I believe are important aspects of working in the social work field.

Compassion is the act of showing you care to others. Going out of your way to care for those who need help. It does not matter if its big or small. You can be compassionate towards anyone from your best friends to complete strangers. At the end of the day everyone deserves compassion. Ellen DeGeneres once said “If we're destroying our trees and destroying our environment and hurting animals and hurting one another and all that stuff, there's got to be a very powerful energy to fight that. I think we need more love in the world. We need more kindness, more compassion, more joy, more laughter. I definitely want to contribute to that.” I think Ellen was trying to say we have lost the true meaning of compassion over time causing us to hurt and destroy the things we care most about. We need to be more compassionate and kinder and enjoy our lives. I believe compassion is one of the most important values anyone can have because there’s so much meaning to compassion. It’s the core of caring for one another. Compassion is one value you need to have going into the social work field. You must be understanding of other situations and be willing to help people to get them into a better situation then they are in now.

Respect means showing regards and appreciation for the worth of someone or something. “Respect for ourselves guides our morals, respect for others guide our manners.”- Laurence

Sterne. I agree with this quote for the fact if you respect yourself, you wouldn’t put yourself in situations that make you question it. You wouldn’t stay in bad relationships or friendships because you would have enough respect for yourself to remove yourself from those situations. I believe respect is a huge aspect of social work, especially self-respect. I feel like a lot of people social workers work with might lack respect for themselves. I feel like social workers value respect and want to show people they should respect themselves so that those people can know what they deserve at the end of the day. When you respect yourself, I believe there’s a real power to that because a lot of people don’t have self-respect and lose their selves over it. So, respect is a huge personal core value but also plays a huge role in the social work field.

Loyalty is being there for someone no matter what the circumstance is and showing constant support through thick or thin. I believe I’m a very loyal person. I will do anything for the people that I care about no matter what the situation is. Loyalty is a very important aspect in any relationship. Without loyalty the relationship won’t be as strong because they are missing that aspect of support. Loyalty is about the people who stay true to you no matter what even when you aren’t around. If you ask anyone of my friends to describe me, I guarantee you they will all say loyalty because I show it every day. I feel like in the social work field loyalty goes a long way for the fact that you have a loyalty to your occupation to make sure your there to help the people that need help.

In the social work field, the values are: service, social justice, importance of human relations, competence, integrity and dignity & worth of the person. The National Association of Social Workers says. “Social workers primary goal is to help people in need and address social problems. Social workers challenge social injustice. Social workers respect the inherent dignity and worth of the person. Social workers recognize the central importance of human relationship.
