Choose companies or industries for which JIT would be totally inappropriate? Explain your reasoning with examples in 200-250 words.

Just-in-time (JIT) involves assembly line production, with a continuous flow attempting to eliminate inventory and any wasteful activities. Automakers like Ford and Toyota utilize this method in order to mass produce vehicles. Large industries are better suited for the JIT method. It allows them to manufacture products with consistency and potentially more accuracy. There are some companies or industries where JIT would be ineffective. If a company is producing products on a smaller scale or producing products that are more specialized then JIT would be inappropriate. Small scaled business does not require as many individual machines as larger industry may, so the assembly line concept may not be beneficial. Also, if products are being made that are very intricate in design, they may have to be hand crafted. JIT gives a manufacturer the opportunity to generate products on a larger scale with added prospects for revenue and business growth. In addition, since mass production is occurring inventory levels are also lower which keeps overhead costs down. “While inventory reduction is the most obvious aspect of JIT, its most valuable benefit is that it forces a company to uncover problems and inefficiencies in its operations.” (Vonderembse & White, 2013) Overcoming issues within its operations is another method that could result in more efficient production.

Categorize different scheduling procedures for various types of service operations, such as restaurants, hospitals, and airlines. Your initial post should include explanations and examples and be 200-250 words.

Scheduling procedures can vary depending on the type of operation. “Scheduling is coordinating work tasks, people, materials, facilities, and equipment needed to create goods and services at a

specific point in time. Scheduling is required for making goods and for providing services successfully.” (Vonderembse & White, 2013) In the case of restaurants, they can utilize peak demand scheduling as well as reservation scheduling. There are times during the day, such as lunch that requires more staff working in order to meet the demand for the customers. Retailers may also use this method for peak shopping hours. In reference to reservation scheduling, restaurant patrons may have an opportunity to make a reservation in order to prevent a wait. Airlines also utilize reservation scheduling for flights. They use this option to their advantage because last minute reservations are typically more expensive. Hospital scheduling is very complex because there has to be continuous coverage for all shifts. Especially in the emergency or trauma care department. No matter the industry, organization or business scheduling is very important and has to be specialized in order to fit that entities’ operational needs.
