Why Abortion Should Remain Legal Abortion has been a highly debated topic throughout American history. From the late 1960s to Roe v. Wade to the present day, the pro-choice movement has become significantly more substantial and has acted as a beacon for women's rights worldwide. Especially within America, a country where the majority of the population are practicing Christians, abortion is a highly controversial issue. Many believe that abortion should remain legalized, while others think it should be banned altogether. Although abortion is currently legal in America, the pro-life movement is actively working to ban it. This is due to many reasons, the biggest one being individuals' religious beliefs on the subject. Banning abortion would actively take away a women's choice to her bodily autonomy and directly limit women's healthcare. While many argue that abortion is murder, the banning of it actively suppresses women's rights and their right to their bodies.

Overall, 1% of abortions are performed within the last trimester of pregnancy. The majority of women who receive "late-term abortions" are doing so due to medical reasons. Many medical complications caused by pregnancy cannot be detected until the last trimester. For example, complications such as placental abruption can be fatal and can only be seen late into pregnancy. "Women sometimes choose to have a late-term abortion because the pregnancy poses

a threat to their health or there are fetal medical conditions. But some women also have late-term abortions simply because they were unable to access one earlier due to difficulty in getting a referral or insurance problems" (Chalabi). Abortion becomes necessary when the fetus is putting the mother's life at risk, and the mother can no longer safely have a child. However, abortion access is limited in many states; this imposes a problem since late-term abortions are often illegal. By taking away women's rights to have a late-term abortion, you are putting the mother's life in danger and valuing an unborn - potential life over a fully developed human's life. Along with this, studies have found that most women who are unable to access "earlier term" abortions are in the lower class and possess less money. Meaning, late-term abortion bans are directly targeting women who make less money and are categorized as poor. "For several years, we have heard warnings about the population crisis. Indeed, so concerned are we that there now are voices in the land calling for "compulsory sterilization" and "compulsory birth control," for the withholding of public support for illegitimate children in excess of a certain number, for conditioning welfare monies or parole or whatever on coerced sterilization, and so on. Yet little is done to make sterilization easily available on a voluntary basis, particularly to the poor and underprivileged. (Pilpel)" By banning abortion, women's rights will directly be taken away. Meaning, women will lose their equality to men. This is mainly because abortion is a form of healthcare, and by denying women the right to healthcare, you are taking away their medical freedom. Although seven out of ten Americans agree to keep abortion legal, it is still broadly debated within current- day politics. "The US is working its way toward a more restrictive abortion regime, some mix of the national and state restrictions that are currently on the table—20-week bans, defunding

unsafe abortions are the third leading cause of maternal deaths worldwide and lead to an additional five million largely preventable disabilities. (Amnesty International)" Abortion rights are fundamental since if abortion were to be banned, it would directly take away a form of healthcare from women. Throughout history, women have actively fought for their rights, one of those rights being abortion. By taking this away, women lose the right to their bodily autonomy and no longer have a say in what they can do with a part of their bodies. Overall, Women's bodies should not be a governmental issue. "the ideology behind singling out young women as being responsible for saying no to sex is born out of the patriarchal notion of hegemonic masculinity: 8 that it is a male's prerogative to be sexually driven and experienced and that it is natural for him to 'sow his wild oats, whereas a female should be modest and restrained lest she become pregnant, a condition that would have an irreversible effect on her life. (Reynolds - Right)" Along with this, having a child is a long-term commitment that should only be done when you are genuinely ready to start a family. By banning abortion, women will be forced to give birth to a child they do not want. This takes a drastic toll on the mother, as well as her child. Being that there are a myriad of pro-life elected officials within public office, it is imperative to have open conversations about this topic to educate those who have the most say in the legality of abortion. By having open discussions on abortion, it leaves room for compromise and education. Being that the pro-life movement is actively pushing for the supreme court to reconsider Roe V. Wade, by having debates on this issue it can change individuals' opinions and biases on the subject. This issue is crucial for women's rights, and banning it will only cause America to devolve and go back in time.

In conclusion, the pro-choice movement has taken significant strides throughout American history for women's rights. Abortion should remain legal within America, and by banning it, women's rights will directly be taken away. Overall, a subject as personal as abortion should not be a governmental issue.
