Inhibits the
enzyme COX-2.
This enzyme is
required for the
synthesis of
prostaglandins.
Purpose:
Decreased pain
and
inflammation
caused by
arthritis or
spondylitis

Pre Med Administration:
Check for allergies of
sulfonamides, aspirin, or
NSAIDs.
Assess ROM, degree of
swelling, and pain in
affected joints before
therapy.
Post Med Administration:
Assess patient for skin rash
frequently during therapy.
Discontinue at the first
sight of a rash; may be life-
threatening. Stevens-
Johnson syndrome may
develop. Treat
symptomatically; may
May cause high
AST, ALT, and
BUN levels.
