ATI Video Case Study: Client Rights Sheryl Labrador West Coast University 420: Principles of Leadership and Management Professor Jennifer Cox September 03, 2021

Client Rights There are ethical principles being taught in nursing school that every nurse should be aware in their nursing practice. One of the main principle is autonomy, and defined as that individuals have a right to self-determination, that is, to make decisions about their lives without interference from others (Silva & Ludwick, 1999). In the scenario of this case study, the client, Mrs. Lieberman, was complaining that her pain was unbearable that she decided not to continue with the chemotherapy anymore. Her daughter, who was by the bedside, then asked to speak with the nurse outside the room, seemed to be not agreeing with her mother’s decision of discontinuing the chemotherapy. I believe the best approach for this is a “Therapeutic Communication” in a way that I say the words empathetically, “I cannot imagine what a tough time you and your mother going through right now. It seemed that you are upset with your mother’s wish to discontinue with the chemotherapy. Have you discussed with her about how you feel with her decision? And most importantly, have you and your mother consulted a doctor on all possible treatment options? Because if not, I can get a consult appointment with the doctor so you and your mother may know about the other treatments or resources available. However, if these options will not change your mother’s decision, it is ethically that we both should respect her wishes as she has the right to refuse treatment as a competent and self-responsible individual.” As the nurse for this kind of situation, I am not only dealing with the patient’s feelings but also of that her daughter’s, and both concerns cannot just be dismissed. Nevertheless, patient’s right is an important factor to consider at this time, one of which is the right to “refuse treatment” and also the right “to have pain treated to a level of toleration.” (Olejarczyk, 2020).
