MODERN FRENCH GEOGRAPHY
The development of modern geography in France took place in the latter half of the
19th century with the impact of Darwinian evolutionary thought after publication of
Darwin’s book ‘Origin of Species’ in 1859. Big advances in the studies of human
societies also led to the evolution of the French School.
France entered the modern era of geography shortly behind Germany. While the
German tradition quickly filled with new scholars, the French owe much of their
tradition to one man, Paul Vidal de la Blache.
Blache is credited for helping to establish an entire generation of geographers in
France. In the outstanding lot of pupils of Blache, one was Camille Vallaux.
