Abstract
Positive interpersonal relationship through interpersonal communication at work fosters a
variety of beneficial outcomes for individual and organization. Interpersonal communication in
recent years has been consistently becoming a paramount requirement for conducting successful
job performance in the organizations which in turn improves organizational effectiveness. This
paper tries to understand how interpersonal communication can improve the overall functioning
of organizations. This research paper will describe what is meant by interpersonal
communication, barriers to effective communication, challenges and then discusses how
interpersonal communications has an impact on the different elements of organizational
effectiveness.

Introduction
Performance of members and effectiveness of any organization depends on the ability of
employees to effectively interact with their superiors, subordinates and co-workers within the
organization and consumers, suppliers and general public outside. Most organizations have
people problems due to lack of interpersonal communications and relationship rather than
organizational business problems. People problems are due to faulty interpersonal relations and
communications, which hinder the attainment of organizational goal. Efforts should be made
therefore to enhance the interpersonal skills of the people at work. It’s difficult to imagine for
any organization which doesn’t require one people to interact with other people. Interpersonal
communication in recent years has been consistently placed paramount requirement for
conducting successful job performance in the organizations. This is why companies and
institutions put a high importance on interpersonal communication and interpersonal
relationships as well. The study of different forms of communication is important, because every
administrative and managerial function and activity involves some form of direct and indirect
communication. Whether any of the managerial functions viz. planning, organizing, leading and
monitoring, managers constantly communicate with and through other people. This implies that
every person’s communication skills has impact on both personal and organizational
effectiveness at high extent. Good interpersonal communication skills are very important to
employees for making a successful and efficient organization. A recent study showed that
