1 INTRODUCTION OF UNIVERSITI UTARA MALAYSIA LIBRARY

Perpustakaan Sultanah Bahiyah, Universiti Utara Malaysia (PSB UUM) is one of the scholarly libraries in Malaysia, which was built upon 1 July 1984, when the university itself was made by the government in February 1984. At the early stage of its improvement, it was put at a temporary campus in Jitra, Kedah, and served to UUM understudies with a developing number of collections and materials. In line with the completed development of the UUM Sintok campus in September 1990, the library moved to the existing building and begun to offer more development or exclusive collections and services based on the scholarly needs. The original building can suit more than 1000 users at one time has been duplicated with the connection of an unused building in 2012. Both buildings which cover a built-up range of 49,169 square meters focused to meet the long-term desire for the increase of students, scholarly members, learning and educating materials additionally the information technology industry within the future.

Due to that until presently, PSB UUM has more than 1 million different materials in its collection with an amazing of more than 100 thousand circulated things each year. It was moreover contributed by the securing of digital things in different subjects that suit learning and educating subjects in UUM with more than 1 million titles.

1 SERVICES

  1. Inter Library loan:
  • Books, periodicals, and other library materials which are not available within the UUM library collection can be gotten from other libraries, which the library have interlibrary-loan agreements through the Publication Supply System. Their users can get the materials from all the libraries in Malaysia. This service is restricted to UUM faculty staff and students only and their users need to look the Library Online Catalog (WebOpac) before setting a request for Inter Library Loan. The delivery will only take between 1-3 weeks for delivery, and they will inform their users when the thing arrives, or in case they are incapable to discover a lender.
  1. Borrowing and reservation service:
  • Staff or student ID card is also their library card, and they will be able to borrow books and other things on their own utilizing the Self Check Machines located at the UUM library strategic area. They will be able to manage their borrowing prepare with the assistance of UUM library friendly staffs.

  • Reservation of books by UUM library users can be made with searching the books within the WebOPAC, and reserve or request the book in case the book is circulated. 1 ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

  1. Self-Check Machines:
  • These machines are utilized to borrow library books and check users current account which found at the strategic area in library premises.
  1. Computer Terminals:
  • Computer terminals for open public utilization of computer terminals were given for users who must browse the Web or doing their scholastic work and they are based on first come first serve basis.
  1. Book Drop Box/Machines:
  • User can utilize this machine to return their borrowed books from the library, which is placed at Level 2 PSB Modern Building, Level 1, PSB Main Building and at users’ faculties.
  1. Photocopy machines:
  • To facilitate the UUM library users with quality printing service, the library has two photocopy machines.
  1. Wi-Fi:
  • All part of library premises is wi-fi free and accessible for all UUM benefactors as most of UUM campus areas are Wi-Fi free. The users can access the network by utilizing the guest account or their account utilizing the UUM Portal identification, and the library users can utilize the fixed line port for network at certain range to connect to the Web.
  1. Security Cameras:
  • UUM library premises are completely prepared with security cameras which record each activity within the library. Users ought to completely aware that their security is ensured as the recording is utilize only for need purposes or criminal prosecution prepare.

1 LIMITATIONS

Despite their best efforts to ensure the accessibility of the PSB UUM library, there could be certain limitations and known limitations for PSB UUM:

  1. Maintenance of machine:
  • There will be the time when some of the machine in the library will breakdown and will take time and high cost to fix it, especially when the machine is not regularly use during this pandemic of COVID-19.
  1. Less friendly communication:
  • Most of the technologies in the library is self-service, and this might cause the lack of communication and friendliness between library users and patrons.
  1. Early closing:
  • All counter facilities inside the library will be closed 15 minutes or more earlier to the closing time of the library.
  1. Low internet connection:
  • Due to the heavily used users or network interruption, the Wi-Fi network use might disconnect from time to time, and this will interrupt users works when they surf the internet.
