Reflection On Hotel Internship

Reflection and Next Steps: Now What?
There were three areas of success of my internship experience :
- Competence – being able to improve my professional skills applying them to various operations which the general manager assistant bears responsibility for.
- Communication – being able to enhance my communication skills through active participation in coordination of the key hotel activities, which involve guests, employees and owners.
- Conflict management – being able to improve my conflict management skills through the ability to timely resolve various guest complaints and service recovery process challenges.
There were three areas of struggle of my internship experience :
- Performance assessment – I should enhance my knowledge and experience in reviewing employee performance. I need to learn how to conduct personnel-related actions such as disciplinary actions and terminations.
- Writing – I should pay due attention to the methods that allow maintaining accurate hotel records including cash flows sheet, hotel’s floor limit,the aging of accounts receivable report , Direct billing etc.
- Leadership – I need to improve my leadership skills in order to provide relevant training to hotel team members with regards to hotel policies and procedures.
How did your knowledge gained from your coursework help you organize, understand, and make sense of the internship experience?
The knowledge I gained from my coursework helped me to organize my internship practice effectively, understand the key aspects of the assigned position and make sense of the role of my internship experience in professional development and personal growth. The key topics discussed in the hotel management course allowed me to succeed in resolving routine problems, including personnel supervision- related problems and business planning problems.
How did your internship experience contradict your previous assumptions, training, or learning?
My internship experience contradicted my previous learning in some way or another. Actually, I had a chance to meet new people and explore the strengths and weaknesses of the profession. I learned much interesting about myself and confirmed that the career of a hotel manager was the right choice for me. Besides, I found that my previous assumptions about the role of hotel management in business development were inaccurate. Now I realize that hotel manager’s duties and responsibilities are designed to ensure successful business development. I found the issues we learned were directly applicable to my internship role in the Hengyuan Hotel. Considering my overall internship experience and the project that I am completing for my internship organization, I can conclude that I took much knowledge from the course and can use it in my new work.
What are the major lessons, insights, and knowledge you learned from the internship experience?
There are several lessons I learned from my internship experience. First of all, I realize now that my preparedness and readiness to ensure performance of the assigned tasks depend on my previous knowledge. Secondly, I learned how to address the challenges that occur in the workplace without being involved in a conflict situation. Thirdly, I found that internrship allowed me developing good time management skills that play an important role in the process of career development. Besides, there are some insights I learned from my internship experience. I learned that it is crucial for a young specialist to demonstrate high level of enthusiasm, absorbing new inflammation like a sponge. This will allow to become more proficient in interpersonal relationships, corporate culture and other areas of my job. Moreover, I found that my internship experience helped me to strengthen relationships with people at my career level. The development of relationships with young people who are at the same career level provides an opportunity for successful collaboration on projects, fair feedback and reliable support.

What did you learn about yourself? About others?
My internship experience helped me to learn much about myself, including my strengths and weaknesses. Besides, I had a chance to learn more about other people. I communicated with employees and clients. This allowed me to become more proficient in assessment of personality traits. My colleagues were happy to teach me new things and give advice. I learned more about different cultures and customs. My internship experience was useful and meaningful to me and to my future career growth.

During my internship, I have developed good disciplinary skills, listening skills, stress management skills and problem solving skills. During the internship process, I participated in various activities to have a good understanding of hotel management and the hospitality industry. Due to the increased communication with clients, I had a chance to develop my interpersonal skills and learn more about different hotel management procedures. Besides, I have enhanced my professionalism in the area of work ethics. Now I can use these skills in different situations, complying with ethical business standards and demonstrating ethical behaviour.

In what ways might you modify your behavior, attitude, or values based on your internship experience?
I might modify my behaviour, attitudes and values based on my internship experience because I might use the obtained information in everyday situations. I feel that I can easily participate in group discussions, express my opinions, give recommendations, etc. In addition, my attitudes toward other people have become more positive due to compliance with the code of ethics. I believe that I have become more disciplined, adaptable and tolerant.
Reflecting on your internship experience, please identify two areas of improvement. What do you plan on doing to address these areas of improvement?
There are two areas of improvement:
- Leadership – I should be focused on developing strong leadership to influence others. This skill will help me to succeed in teamwork, as well as in direction of hotel services.
- Negotiation – I need to improve my negotiation skills to deal with contractors and suppliers, complying with the established rules and regulations.
Where will you go from here with your work, career, and learning?
I am planning to continue my professional development in the selected field in order to succeed in my future career. My internship in Hengyuan Hotel will be useful to me because my future work will be based on the same requirements. I would like to hold the position of the general manager in the nearest future. I am happy that I had an opportunity to get insight into the regular work of the general manager and issues the manager confronts on the regular basis.
