Generic Name: Diphenhydra mine

Brand Name: Benadryl

Dosage: 1 ampule

Route: IVF via IM

Frequency: 30 minutes

Pregnancy category: B

Drug Class: Antihistamine/ Antiemetic

Diphenhydramine is widely used in pregnancy as a sedative, an antihistamine, and an anti-nausea drug, confirm its safety during pregnancy. The drug have oxytocin-like effects.

Indication for the blocks effects of histamine and initiation relaxation and to fall asleep prior to blood transfusion due to excessive blood loss during removal of placental fragments left on the mother’s stomach after delivery.

Contraindicated to a pregnant patient With hypersensitivity to the drug and its components as well.

Contraindicated to breastfeeding mothers Pregnancy Category B - used only if clearly needed.

Side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, muscle weakness, urinary retention, dry mouth, nose and throat, flushing, epigastric distress

  1. Assess and accurately record maternal vital signs.
  2. Monitor patient’s mental alertness.
  3. Explain to the patient the side effects that may occur prior in taking the medication.
  4. If patient is having acute allergic reaction, obtain history of recently ingested foods

and drugs because it may cause contradict to the medication. 5. Assess for tolerance to antihistamine effect. 6. Instruct patient to avoid task that require alertness motor skills until response to drug is establish. 7. Explain to the patient that dry mouth, drowsiness and dizziness may be an expected response to the drug. 8. If drug causes severe allergic reaction then terminate the use of drug and notify the physician for further intervention.
