As the K-12 curriculum was implemented in the Philippines, it caters several changes towards the learning system in the country. One of the main features of the K-12 curriculum is the additional 2 years for the Senior High School (SHS) students. It includes 2 additional years for Grade 11 and 12 wherein the students can choose among the Academic, TVL and Sports Track.
The Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMMS) is one of the academic strand under the K- curriculum. This strand focuses on developing the young minds of students especially in the field of journalism, education, politics, history as well as social sciences. HUMMS students are considered as the future leaders, politicians, social workers, teachers, lawyers and psychologist. As per the deped.gov, through the HUMMS strand, students will be able to grasp information on the different aspects of the society by thorough observation and enhancing critical thinking skills which is truly needed for them to be equipped towards the different challenges that is present in the real world.
An aspiring HUMMS student must be bold enough to enhance his/her communication skills either verbal or written (Edukasyon). It is expected that in the HUMMS strand, students will be able to deliver statements, speeches, reports, as well as to engage in debates in a professional manner. Moreover, students are also likely to analyse and understand several stories and written works from well-known writers and artworks that embodies the culture of the country. In addition, they must also enhance their writing ability. Since HUMMS strand caters journalist hopefuls, the curriculum under this course will definitely focus on the technicalities and styles of writing which the student must develop in order to secure a more promising future as he goes by towards college.
Despite the challenging requirements that the student must possess upon entering the Humanities and Social Sciences Strand, there is also a lot more exciting activities that every students must look forward into. Drama, performances and even debates can be enjoyed by HUMMS students as those activities are part of the curriculum. Movie and story analysis that will empower the every student’s ability to analyse things are also present here. More than the knowledge and skills that the activities aimed to enhance, what it makes more enjoyable is the bond among the students as they grow themselves on the learning environment.
Future competent leaders are key towards the growth and development of the country. And since HUMMS strand develops the future president, lawyers, social workers and professors, Humanities and Social Sciences Students are considered as essential individuals in order to achieve the countries dream in the future which is to have a more competent individuals that will drive the nation away from poverty. With this, choosing HUMMS as a Senior High School strand is truly a great choice.
Every strand are considered equal since each one of them offers a variety of knowledge to the students which deals with their interest. Yet, if we want every Filipino to become more aware on how the society works and how to establish a more competent government and citizens in the future, HUMMS indeed is a strand that the Philippines must prioritize into and encourage the students to be part with.
