day 2

The threat of COVID- 19 is still extremely high, and conducting face-to-face classes is quite a serious decision to make by everyone involved in education.

But our learners cannot be idle for a long time. Our DepEd Secretary has repeatedly said, "Education must continue," So, in today's session, DepEd presented the "all-hands-on-deck" strategy in ensuring that the lessons can be delivered to the students in every way imaginable. It's nice to know that DepEd really finds ways to reach students across the miles.

An important realization from the sessions is that DepEd teachers are really flexible, talented, adaptive, and will take on any challenge for the love of education. It's inspiring to see some teachers from Bicol Region who showcased their skills in TV-based instruction. They seemed like professional broadcasters who exuded so much confidence, personality, and stance.

Moreover, the emphasis on TV-based and Radio-based Instructions and how to conduct effective virtual classes is a resounding reminder that teachers should explore which modality works best for whom and what modalities could be blended to facilitate a deeper and more meaningful learning.

day 3

The morning session included topics that were very useful for work. While I have been using Microsoft Office for ages, I still have many features to understand. That is why I signed up for the Microsoft Ambassadors Program to gain expertise in Office 365 and all its applications. I also just got accepted in the Google Certification Training Program Batch 15 , which starts this September so I'm quite excited about it.

Fortunately, DepEd has partnered with Microsoft, Google, and Adobe in providing internationally recognized certificate training programs for educators. Though being a certified educator does not mean a higher salary, having such achievement would allow teachers to apply their learning experiences into teaching practice. Ultimately, this would benefit the learners more than it benefits the teachers,

Game-based Learning with Minecraft for Education and Mobile Apps Development for Teachers are two themes that are very ambitious and future-oriented. Honestly speaking, they would be too challenging to execute primarily due to lack of equipment and poor internet connectivity. This may not be a problem in countries with sufficient funds for gadgets and fast internet speed, but not in the Philippines where most provinces and far-flung regions have zero access to electricity and internet.

Nonetheless, the idea to use game-based learning like Minecraft is an excellent forward-thinking move from DepEd. Hopefully, it would materialize in the near future.

"Iskul Bubuli: Cyberbullying Issues and Concerns
Video-editing Applications 101
Mobile Apps Development for Teachers
SESSIONS

day 5

Today's sessions included Cyberbullying, which is a timely issue. I found the session enlightening and relevant to our current situation. The proficient use of Learning Management System, video-editing, and mobile apps development are again some of the ICT-integrated skills that teacher should be adept with.

Although the topics were not unfamiliar, the refresher training was quite handy in the mastery of technical terms and in navigating the platforms.

To wrap it up, the week was full of discussions on various themes mostly on ICT and other essential issues such as cyberbullying, awareness on mental health, professional development, DRRM concerns and bits of updates from the department.

I applaud the efforts of the Department of Education to explore every possibility – some more plausible than others – to ensure that the education of the Filipino learners continues despite the uncertainty presented by the COVID 19 pandemic.

I should also once again commend the diligence of my fellow teachers to continue keep up with endless hurdles.
