What role does history take place in the study of Philippine society, culture and identity?
The shifting technologies, environments and ideals as time gone by literally have shaped
society and culture today. Such events that have characterized us are the result of the processes
and interactions within the existing frameworks and systems of the society. The sort of daily
experiences is linked to the realities and phenomena that mostly define our society. And history
essentially is one of the factors that helps us in understanding our responses to environmental
changes of the present. Studying today’s society, culture and identity is as important as studying
its origin or roots. By understanding the basic concepts and ideas as it has something actually
happened and is true allows people to make better sense of the present.
Ever since the Battle of Mactan in the 1521s, warriors of Lapu-Lapu fought conquerors of
land and colonizers to defend the archipelago. Last 2012, the dispute of the Scarborough Shoal
between China and Philippines started. There were news where Filipino navies and fishermen
were bullied and overpowered by Chinese vessels. Until now, we are still unable to shove away
Chinese marines in the West Philippine Sea. In the recent challenges and events that Filipinos
have experienced today, Lo reported hundreds of Filipinos took the streets and mass online
protests were heard loudly across social media platforms against the widely-opposed-anti-
terrorism bill fearing the corrupt system of the government would handle the vague-defined
provisions of the law which were seemed to be deemed unconstitutional terrorizing on basic
human rights and civil liberties, silencing public dissent. Up to this day, the outcries of the public
trends on Twitter and Facebook as Philippines is slipping into the authoritarianism of President
Duterte, thus using methods of the same kind as the long dictatorship of the late President
Marcos. These are only some of the few events that has happened before and feared to be
repeated from the same mistakes of the same corrupted system.
Theoretically, societies have evolved, as human beings have learned to adapt to their
environment which is necessary for their survival (Atienza et al. 77). Social evolution was for the
most part resulted from the processes of socialization and enculturation. (Atienza et al. 77)
Initially, individuals first gathered in small groups and gradually turned into large societies
sharing very common material possessions, specific environments, and practices. Hence, social
organizations have evolved from hunting groups to agricultural communities and industrial
societies. The past has made us understood that the interaction through a pretty common
subject influence how people live and socialize with other members of society. As such in the
present, social organizations in the Philippines such as LGBTQ community was formed and
united by a common culture and shared ideals of social movements. The behavioral patterns
manifested from generation to generation of evolving society and culture creates a relationship
with the present events. In hopes of not repeating the same mistake, this permits us to look
back and recognize the mistakes and struggles of the past to be corrected and prevented today.
