Questions Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser

1. What does the author mean by the expression speedee service and why was it of such great importance?

The author mentions speedee service, because of its importance for the fast-food restaurants and their development. The speedee service system implies work on an assembly line, to speed up the cooking process. This then leads to reduced use of crockery and curlery. This system was invented by the Mcdonald brother`s, since they were tired of all the disadvantages of the previous system. This revolutionary new technology was greatly admired by other restaurants, and they took after. Following the construction of the highway in the United States, the speedee service system played an important role. Self- service restaurants were built near exits of the highway, and soon afterwards the efficiency of the system was realized, and it became a nationwide type of restaurant. There is also an important financial aspect to this. The number of staff required, was significantly reduced and certain tasks were no longer necessary. Another reason for its importance was the new life that developed in Los Angeles, where citizens slowly lost the desire to visit the conventional restaurants. They wanted to avoid standing in long queues, they wanted to buy food that tasted better, went faster to make. In addition, they wanted to sit in their fancy cars and eat the food. This type of restaurant became such a success, that it is still used today, not only in the U. but in all over the world.

2. Which person made children into targeted customers for the first time and why according to the book? The person who first made children into targeted customers was Ray Kroc. The reason for this was that during the decade after World War II, the United States had a baby boom. The McDonald's brothers had focused on the family, and Kroc wanted to invest in a cleaner, safer, American place for children. A marketing strategy where the children were in focus, Kroc thought was a very pragmatic and cunning decision. Kroc said that "a child who loves our TV commercials would bring his/her grandparents and that gives two more customers". This was a winning concept, and this revision has become very important.

3. What is a synergy and what kind of synergy exists between Walt Disney and the McDonald’s corporation? Synergy is interaction between two or more factors that affect a process in such a way that the total effect of the factors is larger than the sum of the factors`individual effects.

A global ten-year marketing agreement was signed 1996, between the company Walt Disney and McDonald's Corporation. This agreement gave both parties a major advantage in the marketing sector. Walt Disney was able to advertise in McDonald's restaurants, and McDonald's had access to studios to record commercials in. Both actors had a similar target group, which made the collaboration strong. Food is something everyone needs, so that the children could see commercials for Walt Disney when they ate, was only something positive for the company. Some felt that Walt Disney got more out of the deal, but in the end, it turned out well. McDonalds got to place their restaurants in Disneyland, and everyone was satisfied and happy, both customers and companies.

4. How does the book describe the average worker at McDonald’s? The stereotypical employee at McDonalds is a youth. An individual who is easy to control because of her little work experience, an individual who accepts a low wage, and a person who is cheap for companies. In addition to this, it is common for the individuals who get these jobs that they come from a lower social class.

5. What does the author mean by the phrase a job at a fast-food restaurant became an American rite of passage****? A job at a fast-food restaurant became an American rite of passage, means that a job at a fast-food restaurant was the first job a youth in America usually got. The tasks there were so simple and other jobs required more experience. Therefore, a job at a fast-food chain was the first stop in the working career.

6. What does it say about injury rates in the book for a fast-food worker? The incidence of injuries in the United States is much higher among adolescents than among adults. One reason for this is that young people on a large scale have a lack of work training. This has led to approximately 200,000 young people being injured each year. Most often it is burns, strains, falls, and slips that cause all injuries. Since the growth and expansion of the fast-food industry combined with the rise of violence in the United

Small chunks of reconstructed chicken, primarily made up of white meat, were breaded, cooked, frozen, and then heated. After launching the product on the market, it quickly became a success, and it did not take long after the launch, before a new variety of chickens was created just to become chicken nuggets.

12. What is said about the meatpacking industry and illegal immigrants? Since the introduction of conveyor belt technology in meatpacking companies, tasks have also changed significantly. With the new tasks, the requirements for the workforce changed completely. In principle, all tasks now required only minimal knowledge in the profession, and a completely different group of workers was sought after. This meant that immigrants, many illegal, came to the United States to work in these jobs, which paid a wage that was only slightly higher than the poor wage. Many came from countries in Southeast Asia, Central America, and Mexico, where poverty was widespread. They saw the jobs in the United States as an improvement on their already poor living situation. Companies saw benefits in hiring immigrants, as immigrants were willing to work for a lower wage than domestic individuals.

In addition, immigrants were not interested in being members of trade unions, nor did they have health insurance. This meant that society was influenced by companies' choice of workforce. The workforce that companies had was often damaged by the work, and this had a negative impact on the medical costs of society. In addition, crime increased in the areas where the immigrants lived, which also affected society. Americans who lived in these areas moved, due to the change in society after the arrival of the immigrants. This made it a more homogeneous group living there, creating a society like a ghetto. A society rich in different cultures, ethnicities, and religions, is a rich society in general.

However, illegal immigrants were not only sought after as labor in this sector, but they were also sought after in cleaning. This is because the job of cleaning the slaughterhouses is devastating and horrible. In addition, the wages of the cleaners are minimal, and an individual who is not in dire financial straits would not take such a job regardless. This again leads to immigrants taking these jobs, as they have experienced worse, even though it is believed that it is not possible.

13. Described what is said about the working conditions at the three meatpacking industries; ConAgra, IBP, and Excel. The meatpacking industry, the worst industry for all individuals, from an employment perspective. The United States, the country where money rules everything. The meatpacking industry is no exception, and those who suffer for it are the employees. It's all about the speed of the conveyor belt. If the speed goes faster, the company makes more money, because more is produced. The chance of getting work-related injuries when working in meatpacking industries is many times higher than other industries in the United States. This has many different causes and working conditions at work are under all criticism. Employees in these industries are forced to work extremely close to each other, which increases the chances of stabbing someone else or themselves with a knife or hook that you have in each hand. Because the tools each individual uses must be extremely sharp, it is extra easy to create wounds that are so deep that they require professional medical care. This is something that the management of the industry sees as something negative, i., that their staff should visit doctors. Companies even have a system for not reporting injuries, because it is bad for the company. Instead of slowing down the pace of work, and thus making the workplace safer, they increase the pace and hire new workers if necessary. This creates a pressure on those who are injured, not to report injuries and not to go to the doctor, because then it becomes clear how much and how often employees are injured in the workplace, which is not good for the company.

In addition, the use of methamphetamine is unreasonably high. Employees take this to be able to be extra focused and "high on life". Employers even advocate this in some cases. They can offer methamphetamine to employees so that they can work two shifts in a row. This can to a large extent create an addiction, which does not only affect the job, because of course there are endless disadvantages with the use of drugs. It is probably the case that it is difficult to only take this drug during working hours because you feel abstinence when you do not take it, i., when you are not working. If you are high when you are not working, it will most likely affect family, friends, or other individuals in the vicinity. The chances of becoming aggressive, quarrelsome, and confused during an intoxication are sky high, and innumerable murders have taken place because of this.

In the meatpacking industry, employees are treated like animals. Does it have to be that way? No, stricter laws could be introduced on working conditions for employees in

14. What kind of diseases can you get by the meat? What is the explanation according to the author to why you get ill by eating the meat? The author mentions multiple diseases but focuses predominantly on ailments caused by the pathogen E. coli 0157: H7. Microorganisms that cause disease, infectious disease, are called pathogens. In this case, the pathogen E. coli 0157:H7 , which arose from a mutation of a bacterium found in our digestive system. There are many types of E. coli bacteria found in our intestines, where they work to synthesize vitamins, guard against dangerous organisms and digest food. E. coli 0157:H7 can produce a powerful toxin, more specifically "verotoxin" or a "Shiga toxin", which attacks the intestinal mucosa. Generally applicable microorganisms are that one type of microorganism can give rise to disease in one individual, but not in another. This also applies to the previously mentioned pathogen. Common diseases or effects that the previously mentioned pathogen has on an individual can be diarrhea, severe cramps in the abdomen, diarrhea with elements of water and blood, fever and in some cases vomiting.

Of the reported cases, about 4 percent are severely affected by the Shiga toxin. The toxins then enter the body's capillaries, and then further out into the bloodstream. Once this is done, the body gets a disease called hemolytic uremic syndrome. this in turn can lead to anemia, kidney failure, destruction of vital organs as well as internal bleeding. In addition, the Shiga toxins can trigger strokes, neurological damage, and seizures. It was previously reported that the pathogens do not affect all individuals in the same way. This is confirmed, as E. coli 0157: H7 mostly only affects the elderly, children under five years of age and individuals with impaired immune systems.

The background to all this is broad, but at the same time logical. Overall, it can be said that the meat contains shit. The pathogen it is all about is of severe birth. It is very easily infected, is difficult to cure and can be devastating, even fatal. Another peculiar property of the pathogen is that an extremely small dose of it is required to become ill. In comparison with salmonella which is also a pathogen that is spread through food, which requires large amounts of organisms to become ill.

The pathogen E. coli 0157: H7 has been around for decades, but with the development that has taken place regarding the breeding of cattle, the slaughter of cattle and the processing of it, the pathogen's chance of spreading has increased like an avalanche. The

cattle are tightly packed in their stalls and thus have very few areas of movement. In addition, the food places have become effective recycling places for their own faeces. This benefits the pathogens to be able to replicate in the cattle, which in addition is not so much affected by the pathogene. In this way, it then becomes difficult to determine whether the cattle are sick or not, in terms of whether to slaughter them or not. The horrors do not end there, with the rising grain prices they began to give the cattle other protein-rich foods, such as waste from other slaughtered animals. This is with the intention that the animals will grow at a faster rate.

After reading about this horrible animal treatment, animal ethics came on the agenda. The breeders do not seem to have taken any responsibility for the value of the animals. It's all about money. They do not seem to have asked any ethical questions. What is it that says that cattle can be treated like that? Could you treat your dog the same way?
