Questions Fast Food Nation
by Eric Schlosser
1. What does the author mean by the expression speedee service and why was it of
such great importance?
The author mentions speedee service, because of its importance for the fast-food
restaurants and their development. The speedee service system implies work on an
assembly line, to speed up the cooking process. This then leads to reduced use of crockery
and curlery. This system was invented by the Mcdonald brother`s, since they were tired of
all the disadvantages of the previous system. This revolutionary new technology was
greatly admired by other restaurants, and they took after. Following the construction of the
highway in the United States, the speedee service system played an important role. Self-
service restaurants were built near exits of the highway, and soon afterwards the efficiency
of the system was realized, and it became a nationwide type of restaurant. There is also an
important financial aspect to this. The number of staff required, was significantly reduced
and certain tasks were no longer necessary. Another reason for its importance was the new
life that developed in Los Angeles, where citizens slowly lost the desire to visit the
conventional restaurants. They wanted to avoid standing in long queues, they wanted to
buy food that tasted better, went faster to make. In addition, they wanted to sit in their
fancy cars and eat the food. This type of restaurant became such a success, that it is still
used today, not only in the U.S. but in all over the world.
2. Which person made children into targeted customers for the first time and why
according to the book?
The person who first made children into targeted customers was Ray Kroc. The reason for
this was that during the decade after World War II, the United States had a baby boom.
The McDonald's brothers had focused on the family, and Kroc wanted to invest in a
cleaner, safer, American place for children. A marketing strategy where the children were
in focus, Kroc thought was a very pragmatic and cunning decision. Kroc said that "a child
who loves our TV commercials would bring his/her grandparents and that gives two more
customers". This was a winning concept, and this revision has become very important.
