Turnitin – Originality Report
Turnitin Originality Report
When you submit an assignment to a Turnitin Assignment Inbox and depending on the settings chosen by your
lecturer, you may be allowed to view the Turnitin Originality Report.
NOTE : The Originality Report for your first submission will be generated within 20 minutes. Next and subsequent submission will take more than 24 hours.
An Originality Report does not detect plagiarism, it provides a summary of the matching text found in a submitted paper.
When an Originality Report is being generated, it is represented by an icon with the text Pending in the Similarity column. When the Originality Report is available to view, the icon will becoloured according to the amount of text that matches to other documents in the T urnitin databases.
Colours are used to show how much matching text has been found:
blue (no matching text)
green (1 word-24% matching text)
yellow (25-49% matching text)
orange (50-74% matching text)
red (75-100% matching text)
An Originality Report is a tool to help you find the sources of matched text to papers in theTurnitin database. You can then check that the matched text is properly referenced.
Your lecturer can also see any Originality Report that is generated by the Turnitin service and can monitor any additional submissions until the Assignment is closed.
Viewing an Originality Report
In the example, 27% of text matches the text in the Turnitin databases and because of this, the icon is coloured yellow. You can view the Originality Report for your submission by selecting the coloured icon in the Similarity column. This takes you to the Turnitin Originality Report screen.

Elements of the Originality Report
Header
The left hand third of the header in the Originality Report shows you the date that it was processed, the Turnitin Paper ID, the number of words and the number of submissions. The middle of the header shows the title of the assignment and the name of the author. The boxes on the right of the header show the Similarity Index (the percentage of text that has been matched) and the sources of the matched text.
Exclusions and Options
Using the hyperlinks at the top of the screen, you can exclude quoted text, bibliography and small matches from the Similarity Index. Using the ‘exclude’ features effects only a temporary change to the Originality Report. Once the window is closed, the report reverts to its original state and Similarity Index.
The mode drop down menu allows you to view the report in different ways. show highest matches together displays the assignment on the left with the matching sources on the right of the screen.
Matched Text Frames
In the left-hand frame, you will see the text of your assignment with coloured highlighted sections accompanied by a number. This corresponds to a number and coloured text (usually a hyperlink) in the right hand frame.
This hyperlink indicates the source of any matching text and the text above it gives the percentage match and the type of source (Internet, publication, Student paper) and the date.
You can compare the matching text in your assignment with the source text by clicking on the number above the highlighted text in your assignment in the left-hand frame. A new window will open displaying the source and the matched text.
