Higher Form of Learning: Active Learning Active learning is a stronger form of learning as the student must form meaningful connections and deeper understanding of the information, they are provided with rather than it being given to them. While it is a greater way to learn it is more stressful and time consuming. This forces the student to learn the information and create new ideas with it rather than to just memorize it for an assessment then make room for the next bit of information laid upon them. Being a free thinker is very beneficial in the real world as well, since a lot of facts and data can be spewed out to everyone, but it is the responsibility of the reader to work out how it can be used to better benefit themselves, others, and the world as a whole. Active learning also allows students to be more attentive and engaged with the information they are learning. It also encourages risk taking as students must now create ideas and connections on their own. These real world connections allow for students to foster real world problem solving which is highly beneficial in most jobs. This allows the information to be better retained and improves overall critical thinking.

In high school, a lot of facts and data are thrown at students with the expectation to memorize and learn it while the strong connections are being handed to them. This may not be a poor system of learning as it allows students to learn multiple subjects at the same time without the need to stay in school for additional years, but this means the students do not get an opportunity to use the information for deeper understanding. Active learning also allows for a higher level of engaging education, keeping the student more attentive and ready to learn. According to O’Brien Moran & Crook (2018), “Students learn better in courses they enjoy” (p. 1). If students are blindly copying notes from a teacher or video for the better part of the class, they will not have the time to retain the information that is being lectured. This cycle will continue, and learning will become increasingly harder as the course progresses. They are then less inclined to enjoy the course which reduces their capacity to learn. Once the

As active learning is a stronger form of gaining an understanding of a subject as opposed to passive learning, it should be utilized in high school. The main method of learning in post secondary education is to learn actively and if most students are trained to do so in high school, the transition will be a lot smoother. Active learning is also a very useful tool in general life as everyday the world is changing with new ideas and technologies. The idea is to use this to our advantage on how we can make life easier and more joyful. Using active learning we would be able to gain knowledge on new technologies being formed, then educate ourselves whether its beneficial to the world or not. Active learning provides students with a deeper understanding of information which can then be passed to other as the information is comprehended rather than memorized. Students will also learn from their mistakes and are given chances to fix these mistakes. Assessments which are about spewing knowledge is terrible for learning as students can make mistakes but being that the information is mainly memorized and forgotten students do not take time to fix the mistakes and rather move on to the next bit of facts and data to be memorized. Active learning also builds great amounts of collaboration skills as students work together and this skill is very useful in everyday life and in most careers. It also encourages risk taking as students must now create ideas and connections themselves. This pulls them out of their comfort zones by creating an environment where risk taking is encouraged. Students then can be more comfortable with active learning and improve their critical thinking. Active learning is not only beneficial to students since the teacher is also able to continuously monitor progress within students with a quizzes or assessments. These quizzes can test for comprehension rather pure fact which can just be memorized without any understanding of the information.

While active learning overall may be a more difficult, making use of it starting at a young age is a great idea as it helps to better prepare for the future. It can bring greater enjoyment out of a class as a whole and allows students to truly understand the material. It forces the information to be moved to long term memory and will not be memorized then forgotten. Instead of the material being spewed out

onto a paper for assessment and then pushed aside for new information, the material will be understood, and new ideas will be created, generating a greater connection allowing for an overall finer learning experience. Active learning will train the mind to look further into every fact or pile of data thrown at them to realize how this knowledge can be useful to themselves and the world. It allows the recipient of the data to then do additional research to differentiate between fiction and fact. Active learning provides students with the skills they need to succeed in the future such as critical thinking, risk taking, and collaborative skills.
