Character: Simon (represents nature and calm)
Simon acts morally not out of guilt or shame but because he believes in the inherent value of
morality
“What I mean is . . . maybe it’s only us” [Simon to the other boys in an assembly] - Simon is the first
character in the novel to see the beast as a non-external force but as a component of human
nature, Simon does not yet fully understand his own idea, but it becomes clearer to him when he
has a vision in the glade and confronts the Lord of the Flies.
“There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast. . . . Fancy thinking the Beast was
something you could hunt and kill!... You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close! I’m
the reason why it’s no go? Why things are the way they are?” [Simon’s Vision of the Beast]
“As if it wasn’t a good island… As if...the beastie, the beastie or the snake-thing, was real.” [Simon
talking about their fear] - he suggests that they are all afraid of not the beastie but the darkness
inside all of them
“You’ll get back all right. I think so, anyway.” [Simon comforting Ralph] - the use of ‘you’ instead of
‘we’ voices Simon’s doubts on whether he will manage to make it home, these words repeat in
Ralph’s head after Simon dies during the final death chase like words of encouragement
“We used [Piggy’s] specs...He helped that way.” [Simon speaking out for Piggy] - everybody mocks
Piggy due to his appearance (lack of physicality) and his accent making him seem “lower-class” but
Simon speaks out for Piggy
