Work of original and exceptional quality which in the examiners’ judgement merits special recognition by the award of the highest possible mark.

The essay will show exceptional command of the subject, drawing on a wide variety of both sources and material, both primary and secondary. It will engage critically with those sources and will be a work of exceptional insight into your chosen topic related to international law, bringing new perspectives or understandings to bear and will be presented and written so that all of the criteria for excellence in the category of Excellent 1st is met and will achieve or be close to publishable standard.

Exceptional work of the highest quality, demonstrating excellent knowledge and understanding, analysis, organisation, accuracy, relevance, presentation and appropriate skills. At final-year level: work may achieve or be close to publishable standard.

High 1st 88 Very high quality work demonstrating excellent knowledge and understanding, analysis, organisation, accuracy, relevance, presentation and appropriate skills. Work which may extend existing debates or interpretations.

The essay will demonstrate all the virtues of the 2:i band with additional qualities of intellectual maturity, scholarly organisation of research, eloquence, and / or elements of exceptional insight in your engagement with the subject. It will show independent research, and some degree of original thought (note that does not mean you need to make wholly

original arguments, but rather that your work will draw on and bring into conversation materials and arguments in an original manner). The essay will meet all the criteria of the award of the 2:i and will present an ambitious writing project carried out with strong writing and organisational skills.

The best work at this level will be highly competent in organisation and presentation, showing evidence of individual research and appropriate and intelligent uses of primary and secondary material. Where the essay is engaged primarily with secondary sources, a wide range of these should be engaged; where the essay is engaged primarily with primary sources, these should be put in context and in conversation with secondary sources. There is no specific number of sources to be used, but strong essays can be expected to engage with at least 10 sources, although to varying extents. The essay must employ a good standard of Modern English grammar, syntax, spelling, and punctuation. It will be structured effectively, make effective and expressive use of language, and engage the reader in the topic.

Work does not meet standards required for the appropriate stage of an Honours degree. Evidence of study and demonstrates some knowledge and some basic understanding of relevant concepts and techniques, but subject to significant omissions and errors.

Work falls below the standard required for an Honours degree and has the weaknesses of the third-class degree without compensating factors. It may include failure or inability to address the topic, poverty of expression, and irrelevance of information.

Fail 32 Work is significantly below the standard required for

the appropriate stage of an Honours degree. Some evidence of study and some knowledge and evidence of understanding but subject to very serious omissions and errors.

25 Poor quality work well below the standards required for the appropriate stage of an Honours degree.

Ineptitude in knowledge, structure, academic/professional practice. Failure or inability to address the topic. No evidence of basic understanding of relevant concepts/techniques.
