Guided Reflection Questions

Opening Questions How did the simulated experience of Olivia Jones’s case make you feel?

-This simulated experience of Olivia Jones made me understand signs and symptoms of preeclampsia more. I was also able to understand how to better treat a woman experiencing preeclampsia. I will be better prepared for a situation in real life when I care for a woman this preeclampsia.

Describe the actions you felt went well in this scenario.

-I would say that felt as though I covered all of the bases during this simulation. I was able to assess the patient and how she felt and then care for her dependent upon her answers to my questions and her assessment.

Scenario Analysis Questions 1 EBP What are the risk factors for Olivia Jones and her baby if preeclampsia is not treated in a timely manner?

-Some risk factors for Olivia Jones and her baby if her preeclampsia is not treated in a timely manner are headache for Olivia, trouble breathing, swelling of hands and feet, changes in vision and pain her upper right belly (epigastric area). Some risk factors for her baby are placental abruption, preterm birth, pregnancy loss or stillbirth, and birth defects.

EBP List the warning signs of hypertensive disorder in pregnant women.

-Some of the warning signs of hypertensive disorder in pregnant women are a headache that doesn’t go away, edema, sudden weight gain, vision changes, n/v, and pain in epigastric area.

PCC What should the priority teaching for Olivia Jones include?

-Priority teaching for Olivia Jones should include the patient not taking extra vitamins, calcium, aspirin, make sure that the patient is going to all prenatal visits and more.

T&C What key elements would you include in the handoff report for this patient? Consider the situation-background-assessment-recommendation (SBAR) format.

-Key elements that should be include in the handoff report for this patient would be the mothers age, background, gestational age, current orders and plan of care, all assessments completed, history of hypertension beginning at 30 weeks, and nursing recommendations for this patient.

PCC What communication techniques could be initiated to decrease the anxiety of Olivia Jones and her mother?

-A communication technique that should be initiated to decrease anxiety in Olivia Jones and her mother is slowing down when speaking to this patient, speaking clearly to this patient and making sure that they are understanding what I am saying, and making sure that she and her mother feel heard during this time, that would include listening when they are speaking and not speaking over them.

S What safety measures should be initiated while Olivia Jones is in the hospital?

-Some of the safety measures that should be initiated with Olivia Jones in the hospital are continuous monitoring of blood pressure, seizure precautions, making sure she will not try of get out of bed because she is a fall risk, and decreasing stimuli so that the patient can rest.

I Consider what information on preeclampsia should be provided to Olivia Jones.

-Information on preeclampsia that should be provided to Oliva Jones are precautions taken with patients with preeclampsia such as limiting stimuli and visitors, as well as bringing suctioning equipment into the room in case of vomiting, seizure precautions, and possibility of cesarean section of complications arise.

Concluding Questions Reflecting on Olivia Jones’s case, were there any actions you would do differently? Explain.

-If I were to do this simulation again, I would have started this patient on seizure precaution sand put up seizure pads on her siderails in order to protect her in case of a seizure.

Describe how you would apply the knowledge and skills that you obtained in Olivia Jones’s case to an actual patient care situation.

-In this care of an actual patient I would apply the knowledge I gained today to care for my patient. This would include decreasing stimuli, monitoring blood pressure, putting the patient on seizure precautions, bringing the patient an emesis basin and more.
