Destiny Ross Education and Career Statement October 8, 2018

As a child growing up in an urban environment where violence was common, it was my primary focus to jumpstart my education as fast as I could. In Bronx, New York, it was all about survival. The key to survival for me was school. In high school, I upheld CEO of a virtual company we had established, all while dual enrolled in three college courses, and maintaining my status on the Dean’s list. The driving force for me was I’d be able to go anywhere for school if I tried hard enough. That’s when I found Santa Fe College. My passion was to pursue medicine; ultimately was to become a surgeon in cardio possibly. Now I’m sure you’re wondering, why nursing? Well we all have to start from somewhere. While attending Santa Fe, I got my Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) license. Now, I’m getting ready to be in the workforce as a CNA. It’s not ideal, which is true, but it’s a great start at ‘putting my foot in the door’ so to speak. Being in the atmosphere of a place where you treat the slightest things that could possibly save someone’s life is truly humbling. This is why I applied for the nursing program. Getting the experience I need will guide me to the right area of medicine. Eventually, after getting my Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN), I’d like to go straight into my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program. It’s online and will take about three years, and then my doctorate of course. Soon after that, I’d be able to truly understand with a foundation already in the medical field whether I’d go even further for medical school. The great thing about the medical field is that it’s flexible enough to do surgery as well. It’s truly one of the ongoing fascinations I have in regards to medicine. Another continuous motivator for me is family. It’s quite understandable for many

college students to not really grasp what they’d like to pursue yet. Me, however, has known since I was seven years old. What sparked my inspiration was two things: me, and my grandparents. Growing up, I was told that when I was born, I was premature by three and a quarter months! If you do the math, I was born five months three weeks. Yes, I had a ninety percent chance I wasn’t going to make it. Back in 1998, being premature wasn’t well understood. I was perfectly fine then, and I still am now thankfully. My grandparents however were different. My grandmother currently suffers from Lupus, and my grandfather passed from Cancer three years ago. In all of theses instances, I’d like to be apart of change that helps others which similar situations. The cure, or at least gathering the information is out there. If I could at least try and prevent from others feeling the way I felt in these situations, it’ll change the future for sure. On that note, being apart of honors can truly help make a difference for me. Financially, since I’m from New York, it can help with books, or even some of tuition for nursing school. As far as everything else, it can work wonders in the health field. The connections that I’d make with other health professionals; you never know who you’d run into. What’s great about this program is the focus areas that they have. As you can see I love to learn. This program would also help in regards to any other certifications I’d like to pursue as well; academically making it somewhat easier not to focus too much on the price, and focus on the tasks that are given. Depending on what specialty you like, you can learn about important aspects on that particular area. I believe with this program, the possibilities are endless.
