COMMON OB MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY

Advance Maternal Age AMA A woman age 35 or older at the time of delivery

Amniocentesis - A procedure used to take out a small sample of the amniotic fluid for testing; amniotic fluid-clear, pale yellow

Amniotic Sac -

Fluid-filled sac that contains and protects a fetus in the womb

Bilateral Tubal Ligation BTL A surgical procedure to cut, burn, or remove sectionfallopian tubes or placing clips to prevent pregnancys of

Braxton-Hicks Contractions B-H or BH Preparation contractions for true labor; typically occur2nd or 3rd trimester es in Cervix - Internal Female Genitalia; located at base of uterus Cesarean Section C/S Surgical method of delivery

Chloasma (Melasma) -

"Mask of Pregnancy"; pigmentation disorder of skin characterized by darker skin patches that primarily affect the face and other sun-exposed areas Colostrum - 1st form of milk produced by the mammary glands Contractions CTX Tightening & relaxation of uterine muscles Dilation - "open"; Opening of the Cervix Dilation and Curettage D&C Surgical procedure to remove tissue from inside the uterus

Effacement -

"thin"; The process of the cervix thinning, shortening, & softening to open the vaginal canal for childbirth

Engagement -

"Baby Dropping"; babys head/buttocks have settled into the pelvis prior to labor; usually occurs 2-3 weeks prior to labor

Episiotomy -
