blocking postsynaptic dopamine receptors in cortical and limbic areas of the brain, thereby preventing the excess of dopamine in the brain

  • orally
  • usually taken two to four times a day

drugs that increase the amount of dopamine in your body (such as cabergoline, levodopa, pergolide, ropinirole), lithium, tretinoin.

Hypersensitivity to phenothiazines. Coma, severe hypotension, severe central nervous system (CNS) depression, concurrent administration of large amounts of CNS depressants, subcortical brain damage, poorly controlled seizure disorder. Severe cardiovascular disease. Lactation.

dizziness, feeling unsteady, or having trouble keeping your balance. blank facial expression. shuffling walk. agitation. nervousness, slowed, or uncontrollable movements of any part of the body. difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.

used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia (a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions) and other psychotic disorder

Monitor vital signs including BP for hypotension. Apnoea monitoring whilst on medication. Observe for signs of adverse effects. Patients should remain supine for 30 minutes after IM injection, monitor BP (tachycardia may occur with IM injection)

Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medicine will affect you. Dizziness or drowsiness can cause falls, accidents, or severe injuries. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy.
