Post-Lab Questions

  • What determines blood type?

There are four main ABO blood type groupings: A, B, AB, and O. These blood groups are determined by the antigen on the blood cell surface and the antibodies present in the blood plasma.

  • What type of blood antigens are expressed if a person is blood type AB-negative?

The blood type determines the surface antigen and the plasma antibodies found in the blood. If a person is type AB Rh negative, then the person has both A and B antigens on the red cell membrane but without the Rh antigen.

  • Why doesn’t a negative transfusion reaction occur the first time an Rh-positive patient is exposed to Rh-negative blood?

If your blood is Rh-negative and you have been sensitized to Rh-positive blood, you now have antibodies to Rh-positive blood. The antibodies kill Rh-positive red blood cells. If you become pregnant with an Rh-positive baby (fetus), the antibodies can destroy your fetus's red blood cells. This can cause anemia.
