Objectives:

####### In this experiment you will study about the two types of

####### collisions between two balls moving in one dimension in which

####### the momentum is conserved while evaluating the kinetic energy

####### of the two balls.

Apparatus:

####### Two balls, frictionless surface and timers.

Part 1 (Elastic collision)

Steps:

 Select elasticity 100% by dragging the blue triangle to the right. Select velocity and values

 Choose m1 = 2 kg and m2 = 1 kg.  Do not change the position values.  Select v1 = 2 m/s and v2 = 0 m/s.  Click on Play and once they collided click on Pause and read the value of vf.  Complete Table j with recorded values  Repeat the experiments using three different values of v1 and record results in Table j.

Questions and answers:

####### 1) The difference of final kinetic energy and initial kinetic

####### energy in elastic collision is always 0

a) True b) False

####### 2) During inelastic collisions which statement is true?

a) Linear momentum is conserved while kinetic energy is not conserved b) Both linear momentum and kinetic energy are not conserved c) Kinetic energy is conserved while momentum is not conserved. d) None of these e) Both linear momentum and kinetic energy are conserved

####### 3) In inelastic collisions the ratio of final linear momentum

####### and initial linear momentum is?

a) 0. b) 0 c) 5 d) 1 e) 10

####### 4) Conclusion:

####### .......................................................................................

####### .......................................................................................
