Required Technological Skills

iCollege Orientation Material: You are expected to know how to use the iCollege system. View the iCollege orientation material found at website: gpc/icollege/orientation/

For additional training material, login instructions, student orientations, and support information please visit gpc/online/. You can also get 24/7 online help at help8.view.usg/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=8075 for technical issues that you experience with iCollege.

Students also need to be able to send and receive email, use an internet browser, locate information using the internet, create documents using word processing software, and to transfer information from your computer to the iCollege course management system.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Students are responsible for all material covered and announcements made in class. Students should conduct themselves in a professional and academic manner that respects the rights of other students and the instructor. Students that do not conduct themselves in a professional and academic manner may be denied access to class and receive a zero for any assignments, quizzes, or test for a time period determined by the lab instructor. Continued noncompliance of these expectations will result in withdrawal from class.

ATTENDANCE

Online students will be tracked and monitored to determine if appropriate time is being spent in the online class. All online students are required to check into iCollege a minimum of 3 times per week and finish assignments and assessment

during that week. Usually, most online grades are a reflection of the amount of time participating in class.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

To successfully complete this course, you must:

  1. Read and take notes on the Pre-Lab material.

  2. Complete all virtual (computer) and wet labs, filling out experiment tracking sheets as indicated.

  3. Read and take notes on any additional material presented following the lab.

  4. Participate in each discussion group at least three times, including replying to some classmate posts.

  5. Create four lab reports on the indicated labs (see Schedule).

  6. Complete the quiz that ends each module.

  7. Complete the online midterm and final exams.

  8. Attend a proctored final exam on campus. See Schedule for dates/times. Speak to your instructor if you live beyond commuting distance from Perimeter College campus.

NO SHOW

Any student that does not log into the online course during the first week of the semester will be considered a

"No Show" and therefore taken out of the class. Please complete the “No show quiz” during the first week of

the semester in order to continue the course. No Shows will be deleted from the class and consequently

withdrawn from the co-requisite classes. Students reported for non-attendance in a required Learning Support,

English as a Second Language, or Regents' Test Preparation course will be withdrawn from all collegiate level

(1000 or 2000-level) courses in which that student is concurrently enrolled.

ORIENTATION - Once you are in iCollege, go to the Student Orientation link and complete the online orientation. You will find that it will be easier to navigate an online class if you just take the time to complete the orientation.

***Computer failure is NOT an excusable reason! Your online class can be access through any computer that has an Internet connection. If you are experiencing computer problems, go to a local Library, Campus Computer Lab, or other college/institution near you to take the exam.

In order to be eligible to take a make-up exam due to one of the aforementioned reasons, one or several of the following must be presented to the lab instructor within a reasonable amount of time after missing the exam (within a few days) and must be VERIFIABLE.

Types of verification include any of the following.

  1. A signed letter from the attending physician. Must be on physician letterhead or prescription stationary. Notes

from a Nurse will not be accepted.

2. Telephone call from the attending physician (not Nurse or Office Personnel).

3. Dated Funeral notice. Relationship to the passed family member must also be verified.

  1. Medical billing statement with either name of the attending physician or hospital contact person along with date

and time of treatment on statement.

5. Other forms of verification may also be considered.

COMPUTER TROUBLES

Before registering for any online course, make sure your computer is working correctly. While taking online quizzes or exams, having computer problems will NOT be accepted as an excusable reason to retake the quiz or exam. Also, having computer trouble will NOT be an excusable reason for not submitting a report by its' due date. Quizzes and exams are

usually open for several days. Any computer problems should be resolved within this time.

Following simple precautions will avoid the likelihood of receiving a zero for a lab report, discussion topic, quiz or exam.

1. Have your computer checked and fine tuned prior to registering for any online class.

2. Prior to taking an exam, connect to the Internet and surf for several minutes.

3. Go to web pages that are graphically enhanced.

4. Go into iCollege and click on various icons/pages.

5. Do NOT take a quiz or exam during a storm, severe winds, or other inclement weather.

6. When in doubt, it's best to take an exam/quiz at one of the campus Computer Labs.

7. When you are certain that you will not be "kicked out" of the Internet, then take the exam/quiz.

8. Once you have entered the quiz or exam, do NOT maximize the quiz/exam pop up window. You will be kicked

out of the exam and will have to start over. Time will be counting down during the time it takes for you to get back

into the quiz/exam.

GRADE DETERMINATION

The final grade will be determined in the following manner:

REQUIREMENT PERCENT OF GRADE

Discussion and Assignment Average 15%

Laboratory Report Average (4) 30%

Quiz Average 15%

Exam Average (Online Midterm, Online Final, Proctored

Final)

40%

These laboratory grading requirements are tentative and subject to change at the discretion of the laboratory instructor.

The mathematical average will be calculated and a letter grade given based on the numerical system stated in

the catalog and repeated below:

A = 90 - 100 B = 80 – 89 C = 70 - 79 D = 60 - 69 F = 59 or below

LABORATORY REPORTS

All laboratory students are required to complete a writing assignment. There will be 4 short lab reports; one for each wet lab performed. Writing guidelines must be followed in order to receive full credit. Assignments received after the due date will be considered late and penalized by 10 points per day late. NO REPORTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER TWO DAYS LATE! Check the iCollege Calendar or Laboratory Exercise Schedule for the due dates for each report.

****Note: There is no acceptable late work for the mini semester courses. If it’s late, it will not be accepted.

A Lab Report Form for each lab report will be available in iCollege. This is a generic form and will be used for each lab report. The lab report must be completed by its' due date and submitted to the appropriate dropbox. Do NOT send the lab reports through my Perimeter College email, Private iCollege email, or the Discussion board. Any lab report submitted

through email, Private email, or discussion board will NOT be accepted and will be deleted resulting in a zero(0).

***All answers must be in your own words and not plagiarized or copied and pasted from pre-lab write-ups. Make sure that you maintain a copy of the lab report for later study.

DISCUSSION BOARD POSTS

There will be several critical thinking discussions during the semester. Correspondences concerning the laboratory Discussion Topics must be posted on the Discussion Board. Other questions and discussions can also be posted here. The number of times in which the Discussion Board is accessed by the student will be tracked by the instructor and counted toward attendance.

During each topic discussion, questions will be posted by the instructor. Students will discuss the topic questions during the time specified. Each discussion should include:

 Thoroughly addresses topic and demonstrates understanding of concept discussed

 Reflection (personal) about the topic and what you have learned.

 Response or feedback to views of others. Simple agreements such as "Me too!" and "Really good point!" do

not count as posts or replies. All posts and replies must promote discussion of the topic to count

 Observation of critical thinking skills

SAFETY AND HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

Most of the household chemicals used in the lab experiments are considered non-hazardous unless ingested. All precautions stated on the household chemical label must be followed. Georgia Perimeter College does not take responsibility for any misuse of a household chemical during the performance of an "at home" experiment. It is the students' responsibility to read all precautions and hazards stated on the chemical label prior to using. Read the Safety in

the Home handout before beginning any experiment.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY

The college will assign a grade of "W" if the student officially withdraws by mid-semester (the last day to receive a "W"). After mid-semester, withdrawal will result in an "F" course grade unless a hardship waiver is granted by the Academic Dean. It is the student's responsibility to withdraw through the Enrollment and Registration office in the event that becomes necessary. If you stop attending class you will be assigned the grade you have earned in the course. All missed work will be assigned zeros. Withdrawal from lecture will result in automatic withdrawal from the co-requisite lab class. Any student that does not log into the online course during the first week of the semester, or does not complete “No

Show” quiz during the first week of semester will be considered a "No Show" and therefore taken out of the class.

***Should a student withdraw or be withdrawn from lab class or registered as a No Show (NS), he/she will

automatically be withdrawn from the lecture course.

INCOMPLETE

A grade of incomplete is assigned only when the student, for non-academic reasons beyond his/her control, is unable to complete some specific part of the work required. The work completed must be satisfactory (passing) to that point. An incomplete must be made up the following semester or will convert to an "F". A formal petition for the incomplete, with documentation, must be filed with the Science Department.
