Dr. Jamison English 1101, 1:30 10/22/17 Pantene Advertisement Essay When it comes to companies trying to sell their products they look for people that would make their items sells more and make their items look better. The person that they find will end up being their spokesperson. When a spokesperson is chosen that person makes statements about that product to help the company sell their item. I found an ad for hair products by Pantene. I see this ad a lot on TV and in magazines. I found this one particular ad in the People magazine. I found another ad for Pantene for the same product but in Vogue. All the ads that I have been seeing for Pantene, have one specific person and this person is representing Pantene. Pantene chose Selena Gomez, a famous singer and actress, as their spokesperson. With Selena Gomez as their spokesperson, they are using her reputation to appeal to the eyes of their audience. This company’s target audience for their shampoo and conditioner products are women. Not only is the Pantene company targeting women they are also targeting young girls. Young girls love Selena Gomez, they see her as their role model. Young girls look up to Selena and they want to become her. All of Pantene’s ads in magazines and on TV that has Selena featured in, will stand out more towards young girls because it makes them want that product since they think that Selena uses it. Having Selena as their spokesperson helps them a lot with the sale of their products. Mostly all companies like to use visual appearance to appeal towards their audience. On this Pantene ad, they have the word “unbreakable” in all caps and in big font to stand out more. Pantene wants their customers to know that when they use these products that their hair will break less than their hair would usually break with other hair products. Using the word “unbreakable” is a logical fallacy because hair can’t really technically break as they are making it seem. Hair can be bent, shaped and even styled, but it cannot break. Another visual appeal that the ad is using, is having Selena Gomez look really ecstatic with a big smile on her face and her eyes squinted shut. It makes people think that she is really happy with the results of the product. Them making her look like that is not really effective because we don’t actually know if she even uses Pantene hair products. We don’t know if her hair actually looks like that from the use of Pantene or a different hair product that she likes to use. Nothing in this magazine ad is effective. From the words they use and the image that they decided to apply, it doesn’t seem like what they are showing is effective at all. It doesn’t make me want to get into my car and go to the store to buy their hair products. In all honesty, I don’t even like their products I find Aussie to be a better hair product for my hair. Pantene needs to work on their had to be a little bit more persuasive and appealing. It might attract certain people, but it doesn’t attract a lot with how they are putting things. Having Selena as their spokesperson might help them right now with the sale of their products, but what’s going to happen when the contract they that have with her is up. Who’s going to be their new spokesperson? When it comes to making ads that’s what companies have to focus on a lot. Finding a new spokesperson and a better way to sell their products than they did before.
